i am watching a video by a guy who i thought knew a lot about medicine. but he keeps pronounce ibuprofen as "eye-bee-profen".

i've heard some other people do this and i wondered if it was common or perhaps regional.

how do you say it?

I've always heard it the first way, well the y is not pronounced strongly though, and the knee dr I went to today for some pain in the knee said it that way as well.

edit: yes like this, with not much of a y pronunciation in there
I-bu-pro=fen

I'b-You-Pro-Fen

This is the way.

ox-y-co-done

Incidentally, the first link for a search for oxycontin is the national suicide hotline number followed by NIH, CDC, DEA, and DOJ.

Mmmm...percodan/percocet...(or in its time-release formulation, oxycontin.)

EE-BOO-profen. But i'll stoop down to your level and pronounce it EYE-BOO-profen if i'm at a pharmacist in England.

The trick is to understand that medical terms, including the retail names of medicine, are based on Latin.

the trick to english is that we destroyed norman latin from within after 1066

latin must be PURGED

I think it is regional, like I have a Michigan accent, which I did not know existed till moving south. We reduce words down to as few syllables as possible. But I digress, I just call it Motrin.

Where I live now, every soda or cola or "pop" as how I know it, is called "coke". You goto a restaurant and they will ask if you want a coke, then they will follow up with we have Mtn Dew, Dr. Pepper, Pepsi ect.

Eye-bee, located in MA, never heard anyone anywhere (even when traveling) call it something else pronunciation-wise. I’ve heard people just call it Motrin or advil. It’s not something I strike up conversations about though

pop is the one true word

regions that call it coke are insane to me.

then again, i call all tissues kleenex. even puffs or the off-brands.

How? How do you go to eye-bee when the letters are ibu?

All cotton swabs are q-tips, too.

This was my question. I've never seen a 'u' used for an 'ee' sound. I could understand pronouncing it 'eye-boo', but 'eye-bee'? That's crazy talk.

It's 'eye-bew-pro-fin'

Advil Dual Action - ibuprofen and acetaminophen.

For my most recent implant, the specialist didn't bother with a bone graft. He just drilled directly into my skull. But then I guess he had to put in a rat's nest of sutures to make sure the bone healed. That ended up causing part of the flesh on the roof of my mouth to drop off, but ever so slowly. I eventually had to snip it off myself because it was so icky.

But aside from that, it's now almost a month later and it's still painful to eat anything. He's been such a piker in prescribing any narcotic pain killers and this the only OTC analgesic that sorta helps.

I don't generally like to try to pronounce long generic drug names so I normally just say that it's advil and tylenol (no caps since these are virtually generic names now, sorta like xerox, kleenex, etc.)

When I just DDG’d it:

ibuprofen /ī″byoo͞-prō′fən/

Throw a y in there I guess
