Just saw these show up on my checkcard (yes, you DO get the same protection with a check card that you do with a credit card) in the past few days.

I had four total charges totalling around $100.

This is the card I use for a lot of the deals I find here, so I'm sure I won't be the only one.

Credit card fraud happens every day. Everyone should always check their credit-card statements, not just check them when someone posts a new thread on AT telling them to do so.

Sorry to hear about that.

With the greater frequency of fraudulent credit card charges lately, how come you guys don't use one-time use credit card numbers more?

I use American Express' Privatepayments the most.
Followed by Citibank's one-time use number (on my Sony Citibank card).
Discover offers it too....

Know what I'd really like to see?

A website where people could go after discovering fraud, and enter in all the places they've exposed their CC number in the last month or two, building a database which just might show some interesting, uhh, trends. It wouldn't be directly accusing any place in particular since some people have reservations about doing that, but the statistics could speak for themselves.

MBNA has the best one-time-use credit card numbers program. You can choose to do it either with an application you keep on your computer, or through their website (unlike some that force you to download an app that annoyingly pops up everytime it decides you are going to make a purchase). They also let you choose the maximum limit AND the expiration date. Once it is used, it can be used again until the expiration date, but only for the SAME merchant that first used it, and only up to the max limit you first specified. If you have reason to believe that your card is going to be fraudulently charged in the future, you can simply kill it "on the fly" instantly, to prevent any further charges on that number. This is most useful when you sign up for a trial service, then call to cancel it, but are worried that your request to cancel may not be honored, and that they may try to charge your card the full amount anyway without your permission. Excellent service.

Although some debit/check cards offer protection against unauthorized purchases you should still only use a credit card for internet purchases, unless you don't have a cc or can't qualify for one - then you obviously have no choice.

I also agree with MontyBurns you should monitor ALL your financial accounts frequently to check for discrepancies and report them immediately. Banks/cc's usually give you 30 days from your statement date to contest charges.

I read that due to the fact that a debit card is linked to a bank account (which is FDIC insured)- ALL fraudulent charges to a debit card are covered. A credit card may reimburse fraudulent charges less a deductible ($50.00 or so) or fee.

If this is true, it would be better to use a debit card for online purchases since buyer is 100% protected.

Anyone experience this or can attest to this being true or not?

That is not acurate Most checkcards (Debit) do not have the $50 responsible fee. check with your bank. Just cause it says VISA do not assume.

I got my bill yesterday and found about $75 worth of charges. I first checked the website for the charge and was promted to enter my CC#, I didn't, no way in hell was I going to give them another chance to steal some more money. I'm still trying to find how they got my CC#.
These charges were on a First USA Bank CC, and I have only been using the card online for places like Staples, NewEgg or maybe one or two other reputable merchants. I suspect my information could havre been sold by First USA Bank, a search on the web shows this bank to have pulled some scams over the years.

My card got hit by the same place last month(Campay.com and two others). I caught it day one when checking my card statement. It was a FirstUSA also. I called and got my other accounts changed as soon as I saw that. (My Amex, MC and the FirstUsa Visa.) If more people get hit and its on FirstUSA, I think I'll cancel with them. Not worth the risk.
