God I hate when they raise rates like that. Just like the cable companies. Service goes down and prices go up. Anybody got an opinion on the Dish Network? Maybe it's time to switch.

Dish? DTV and Dish will be one if the merger goes through....if you think the rates and service are bad now!?!

Cable may be the big winner in all of this....

they haven't mentioned a price raise for me... they tried to persuade me to get total choice with local channels for 37.99 though

if they really raise the rates i'll cancel the service

Cancelled mine last week...I watch TV about 1 hour a day - so didn't see the point.

I get satisfactory reception using an "FM" antenna for local stations.

Hey!! I'm saving $60 a month!!!!

Doubtful that this merger will go through... Don't think that the govt is going to want to see only 1 player in the US market for satellite service. (and big dish doesn't count)

Great, a merger between Dish and DirectTV. That's all we need. Well, I wrote my "elected officials" and told them what I think of that. Anybody else want to they can use the handy form on the Dish web site. Link Looks like I'll probably be cancelling my service and going back to free local programming. Oh well, too much time is wasted in front of the boob tube anyway.

I switched from DirecTv to the Dish Network last July. I got in the the Dish Network's "I like 9" promotion, which saved me about $260.00 this first year. I had been with DirecTv for about 8 years before I switched. I tried to give them a chance to match the offer or came close to it because I really did not want to go though all the work of changing the equipment over, but DirecTv would not even make a counter offer. After I called to cancel the final time, then DirecTv tried to keep me but I had already had the new equipment up and running. That really pissed me off but their offer did not come close to what I got with the Dish Network.

The Dish Network did raise their prices a couple of months back. Part of it was do to the cable companies and some FCC laws about local stantions that the dish companies had to offer all the channels in a local area and not just some like they were doing with their local packages. These changes used more band width of the satelites, besides the Dish Network had not raised rates for about two years before this.

I pay around $15.00 a month for this first year with the "I like 9" promotion though the Dish Network were I was paying about $36.00 with DirecTv for about the same programs. I also got upgraded equipment with the recorder built in (not as good as TiVo but something like it) for $35.00 by trading in my 8+ year old DirecTv equipment. Would I do it again....yes!

I called DirecTV up, threatened to cancel service to Dish Network, and received $125 in credit and $10 off my Total Choice Package a month. After I used up the credit I went ahead and cancelled the service.

I put my DirectTV service on hold because I still like cable better (no pixelation in an analog signal..noone at DirectTV would even talk to me about how the quality of the picture goes down in compressing). So I had a $30- credit show up on my bill. They wouldn't mail me a check because it was just "on hold". I had to cancel to get my money. Funny, I told them that there was a chance I'd re-subscribe, but no way in heck now.

I do thank them for my 52 weeks of movies at Blockbuster, my 3 months of HBO, 3 months of Showtime, and the 2 receivers..all for $9 plus the $21.99 a month.

Actually, DirecTV just lowered the price of total choice plus -- it was 36.99 before and they lowered it in February to 35.99. They also lowered the price of adding the local channels to the Total Choice plus. $39.99 per month for total choice plus with locals is only an extra $4 per month instead of the extra $6. My package is now $3 per month cheaper -- something that won't happen with a cable subscription.

i don't understand how people could think the merger could be a bad thing, the only way these companies can compete with cable, who owns 70% of the business, is to create a satellite company that can offer all the same services at affordable prices

this merger would create local programming for all satellite users, more channels, better programming than any cable provider, and plus Dish and DTV broadband internet would be able to compete with cable and DSL, giving internet users another choice and create more competition

Dish Network + Direct TV would not be all bad. If the merger goes through they can combine resources and offer local channels through the dish to 200 TV markets instead of 41 or whatever they serve now. I live in a crappy TV market and cannot receive local programming very well with an antenna (plus living in an apartment does not help because I can't mount an antenna). The people that complain are the ones that live in big cities that CAN get locals off their dish. They don't know what they are missing because they have not experienced TV hell like in markets too small to uplink local stations. I prefer satellite TV because the quality is superior to our local cable (both analog and digital) and I don't have to pay school and local taxes on my bill every month. Plus it is WAY cheaper. It costs me $45 for the same channels the cable company charges $67 for every month.

UMM....correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that link you gave us is in support of the merger. You imply it to be against the merger, although this was probably just an honest mistake.

armando416,
That link is to a page where you can write anything you like, click on send, and it will be forwarded to the FCC and your Senators and Congressmen. Now I'm sure the sponsors of the web site it's on would like you to write favorable comments about the merger. But that is not required. You can express whatever opinion you like and click on send. I don't think they're censoring the content, just providing an easy means of letting you have your opinion heard. Well my particular opinion wasn't too favorable, but I sent it on. I imagine others can do the same.

dish had gone up the first of the year, but contary to the early post it went up last year too. i've had dish 3.5 years, in that time my package has went up 15% and locals went up 20% i live in an area where i cannot get local cable or i would be all over in to get cable internet, the only way i would want to see the merger go through is if they can come up with a cost effective way to provide inernet and tv on one dish
