I was at Best Buy the other day. I saw the Sony 700A DL burner there for $200, so I thought these links were pretty sweet for those who might be interested.

Beige Bezel

Black Bezel

My only concern is the slow 2.4x burn speed of dual media. If my math is correct, it will take over 40 MINs to burn a DL disc.

aww man you got me all excited for nothing (well probably nothing). i read the article regarding its firmware flashing and it said that although you could flash it there will probably be problems with the actual burning and its very YMMV. 97.99 for a burner than is guaranteed to burn DL's would be SMOKIN'.

Quote from the CDFreaks:
This is intresting information as this means that it will very likely be possible to overclock a ND-2500 to a ND-2510. However there is a big but. It is unlikely that all ND-2500 drives will be able to correctly write to double layer media.

The store links apparently say that they're selling the 2510, not the 2500, so this sounds like it's a pretty good deal.

The 2510a is the dual layer burner, not a hacked 2500a.

NEC introduced its first dual 8x DVD recording drive ND-2510A, that supports beside 8x write speed for DVD-R and for DVD +R media as well as 4x write or rewrite with DVD-RW and DVD +RW media to write up to 8.5GB on the new double layer DVD+R9 media. Besides DVD recording, the drive writes CD-R media with 32x speed as well as Ultra-Speed CD-RW discs at 16x. The read speed of 12x for DVD-ROM and 40x for CD-ROM in combination with the access time of 140 ms for DVD and 120ms for CD comprise the most important 9 optical storage functions in 1 drive ? the ideal all in one optical device. Here are some specifications of the drive.

Well, I'm sure after MIR and stuff we could get it down to $4.75 a disc

Yeah pretty sweet deal, I think I may wait till write speeds get a little faster than 2.4x though and media prices come down, 2.4 x would take an hour to burn full dual layered heh.

good deal....BUT..no media for another 1 1/2 months. By then, you'll probably have more DL choices to choose from...

Interestingly, you go to the site, press the "Order" button and your cart comes up empty (YMMV, I suppose). No workaround that I can find and this is for Beige or Black bezel. Kinda weird. Didn't really want to order, just wanted to see what shipping and taxes would be to CA. Am subscribing to this thread, though, because I've yet to get a DVD writable drive of any kind. This would be a good candidate?? I will definitely be writing some movies from DVDs, some from DVD rips, some data backups and writing some disks with video-capture from analog VCRs, edited video from digital camcorder (and who knows what else?)

Calm down poeple that's not the real NEC 2510A DL drive, it's just a 2500A with the firmware from the 2510A. Wewarehouse.com is just trying to steal your money.

Read the part on the page that says the specifications for the ND-2510A are the same as for the ND-2500A and as we reported yesterday some ND-2500A owners have already tried to flash their drives with a leaked ND-2510A firmware.

Updates My bad, that is the real NEC 2510A DL drive, I found it also selling at atacom.com for $99.95 (OEM) + shipping. (BLACk, SILVER or BEIGE) LINK

Here's a review of the NEC ND-2510A LINK to review

Well...also shipping to CA is $8.50-10, and they charged anotherh $8.25 for tax...
so like $116.00 or so.... Not too bad...but i agree with the fact that it's probably the ND-2500A...anyway, hope this helps.

Well they do have the old 2500 for $76....

I love the way they kinda misleadingly describe +/- drives as "dual drives"!

I've bought media from them before, and they've been fine, although they do usually kinda modify your order (like you'll get a spindle instead of envelopes).

i originally thought it was a 2500A flashed to 2510A but apparently its not. i guess its time to jump onto the bandwagon. their recent reseller reviews arent too encouraging. as soon as i find a quarter im going to go flip it and let fate decide.

Newegg has it now for $92.99 Free FedEx Saver Shipping of course.
If they can start out selling it at that low of a price it should be selling for a lot less in 3 or 4 weeks.

This is a interesting idea. Why do you think the ND-2510A is starting so cheap? Maybe because it is pound for pound the same exact drive as a 2500A. And once DL DVD+R starts getting reasonably priced, people will know if hacked 2500A can trully burn DL DVD+R. I am sure that some 2500a probably can't handle it, but the I bet that the vast majority will. And why are they priced so low, maybe because NEC knows that eventually the hacked 2500A will be possible and everyone will buy 2500A over 2510A. So what they do to counter that is to charge a very low price for 2510A so people will just cough up about 30 more dollars to get a guranteed DL drive.

yup... im ready to cough up 30 more bucks to get that guarantee.

i know this is speculation, but how much do you think these drives will be when the media finally comes out?

You know how this works. It'll be much lower most of the time and there will be a few $50-70 deals involving rebates (and of course the 4x, 8x, 400x versions will be just around the corner)
