ICS problem with PPPoE

I'm trying to set up a local network to share a DSL connection in my apartment with my roommates computers (read server and 3 clients). I have WinME on the server and on two client computers, while my computer is running win2k. We get a dynamic IP address, so my first NIC in server is set to get IP automatically while the other NIC is set at 192.168.0.1. Right now, I'm just trying to get one computer running with it, but for some reason I cannot ping the server. I went through the networking wizard and said that I get the internet through another computer which has direct access to the internet (or whatever that option really says). Is anyone out there using Enternet 300 software, and are there any special options I have to set up on the network somewhere. I had this set up to work a couple months ago but had another problem that wouldn't allow all 3 computers on at once (long story), so I quit working on it for a while. At that time Practicallynetworked.com had a great setup page for the enternet300 users, but I cannot find it anymore.

Save yourself a ton of trouble and get a broadband router. I use a Linksys. It has 4 ports, built in switch, and built in PPPoE support. Approx $180USD.

My problem is that I have an old PII 200 computer just lying around and I'd rather get it working than spend another $100 on a router.

!!! Please Read !!!

I've been down this road before. I used Enternet300 with ICS and PPPoE. To get this to work right you MUST set the clients MTU to a value lower than 1450. Search http://support.microsoft.com for PPPoE and ICS and you will see knowledge base article on this very problem.

I've heard many good things about this broadband router as well. However, does it come with a backup 56k modem built in so that if in case the broadband isp is down that you can still dial in via a modem. Kind of clunky to have router and my old modem when you can have combo package. Any particular type that is good for price and quality? thanx

I think only PPPoE routers will work in this setup, otherwise, you'll need software to dial into the dsl connection. Here's a solution if you don't wanna spend money on a router or if you don't wanna install new software and just wanna use 2 NICS:

I did this on 98 not ME but I'm guessing it's the same. Sorry if I'm missing details, doing this from memory, don't actually have this setup, did it for someone else:

Make sure your "server" can connect to the internet (make sure you select the right hardware adapter for that DSL dialup software). Setup internet connection sharing and use PPPoE as your internet connection, set the other NIC (for your LAN) as your home connection. I forget the exact terms ME uses. Setup internet connection sharing as ME instructs (setup tcp/ip: IP addresses, gateway, DNS for yer computers, i've always done it manually, dunno how that setup disk work exactly). AFTER you're connected to the internet on your server, you gotta renew the IP address for the PPPoE adapter. Then use this line command:

ipconfig /renew number_of_PPPoE_adapter

if you don't know which one is the right adapter go a dos window and type ipconfig to show your adapters; I think the PPPoE one will have IP address 0.0.0.0. After you run the "ipconfig /renew number_of_PPPoE_adapter" command all your computers should have internet access. You gotta do this command everytime you reconnect, sorta sucks (make a batch file and put it on yer desktop or something). I'm assuming you can get yer LAN working on yer own... this is just to get dial-up DSL to work.
