a emonster 550
this was running fine and connected to the network

i updated xp with 24 security updates and a couple of pirorty updates , (its been off for a few months)
while the dls were installing the cpu froze at about 1/2 way i had to do a hard reboot
apon restart it said many errors and windows did a check or something ( it was on my 46 in projection tv Very hard to read)and self fixed i rebooted again

i rebooted and all 24 updates installed np, but now i cant get on the net i have tried running straight to the modem still no go.
when i try to active windows firewall it says ICS not installed would i like to install , i click yes and it comes up with a error and fails to start
i went into admin tools under control panel
and tried to start ICS there , and i get an error #2 files not found

how would i go about reinstalling the ICS files , or better yet where would one find the files to reinstall them

or is there something else i maight be able to try to get the beast up and going

thanks for any help in advance

The first question is:

Do you intend to use ICS?
ICS is used when you have no router and want to share an Internet connection with other computers. You install two network cards in your PC and the other PCs connect to your second network card. Is this what you do? Or do you share your Internet connection by using a router?

Well, there's lots of other stuff to look at, but the fact that your networking quit right after a Windows Update makes me think this could be the problem. Try it and report back.

If it DOESN'T work, please respond with the results of the following DOS command from both a WORKING computer and your NON-WORKING computer.

1) Open a Command Prompt (DOS Prompt) window
2) Enter this command in the DOS window: "IPCONFIG /ALL" and hit "enter key"
3) Copy/Paste the entire results back here, please.

To all:
The OP's error message upon running IPCONFIG /ALL on the troublesome PC was:
------------------------------------------------------------------
"Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

windows ip configuration

An internal error occurred :the request is not supported
please contact m$ product support services for help

additional information: unable to query host name."
---------------------------------------------------------------------
His other PC had a normal response, showing a router at 192.168.1.1, with Default Gateway also 192.168.1.1 and his DNS is his ISP's DNS server.

Well, I've seen this message before, and it's not uncommon. Basically, your TCP/IP networking services are damaged.

You can try this Microsoft solution (from the DOS prompt):
Microsoft: How to reset TCP/IP in Windows XP
netsh int ip reset

Here's a Microsoft solution: re-installing TCP/IP:
Microsoft Support: How to determine and recover from Winsock2 corruption
I'd concentrate on the last few paragraphs, where you do a re-install of TCP/IP. Basically, you tell XP to re-install the TCP/IP Protocol Warning: Do NOT install the TCP/IP Version 6 Protocol. Follow the instructions carefully and you'll see the option to re-isntall "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)".

There's also a non-Microsoft fix (an .exe file) that resets the TCP/IP stack.
LSP-Fix for repairing Layered Service Provider, which is damaged by improperly removed Internet connection software.

Frankly, a LOT of people get this error. It's often blamed on either a former Spyware infection (that messed with TCP/IP and was then removed, leaving TCP/IP permanently confused) or on the addition and removal of non-Microsoft TCP/IP modifications (like AOL or Yahoo or other special network setups). I have NOT seen a lot of successful repairs of this problem. The only assured repair is a complete re-install or, at least, a Repair Installation of Windows XP.

Sorry you didn't fix it. Frankly, I've NEVER seen any of the suggested fixes work. But I'm always hopeful.

As I mentioned, I've seen this myself and have seen it mentioned numerous times on Help Forums. And I don't think I've ever seen it fixed.

If anybody else has a known fix for this....I'd love to hear about it. Thanks.
