I'd like to know a little about a lot of things

I was watching over the thread about communism and socialism and whatnot and realized that I know little-to-nothing about it. I'd like to...educate myself in some various subjects.

Any book recommendations that you think everyone should read?

Go to a liberal arts college.

Edit: I'm joking but spending time in a library can help. Also, when you run into a subject you don't know very much about, research it on the internet/wiki.

The problem with using google or wikipedia is that I often find I don't know what I'm looking for. I can't jsut type in "things I don't know" and expect relevant answers.

just remember, if you want to do more than skim a topic, go elsewhere to fact-check the wiki. some of the articles may be of good quality, some may not, and its worth lookign around if you want to be accurate should you talk about a subject

The problem with Wikipedia is that it's reactive rather than proactive. You don't know what something is, so you go look it up.....wrong. You need to learn things and keep learning things and suddenly you're in on every discussion.

Did you go/ will you be going to college? There are general education requirements on top of your major that really fill you in on most of the basics.

Read it like a novel.

It doesn't go too in depth on most important issues, it just gives you an understanding of it so you can utilize it in day to day discussion.

I keep it around for when I want to make references in my writing.

i would suggest simply taking an encyclopedia from the library and start reading it. u can skip what u know and learn thing u didn't.

Geez, dude, you're just a kid. Don't worry about how much you know right now. Your electives in college will give you a nice introduction to many topics.

That's too bad.

Math is my best subject, but English is my passion. I'm only taking Religion in hopes someone can clarify the basis of belief, I still don't really understand it. Personally, I don't believe in God but I'm open to opinions. This class would give me facts or teachings to base my arguments on.
