Libraries have literally several books that I have no interest in reading. It never occurs to me to try to keep other people from reading them. How does one get so dumb and mean? I mean, I mean, reading the worst book ever is still better than watching TV.

Careful they’ll be reading Mein Kampf

I've lived in Ida-Ho from one end to the other. The state really IS the West Virginia/Kentucky of the western USA.

It's a shame because it is really beautiful country.

parts of it really are...but, northern Ida-Ho has some horribly polluted waters from all the mining over the years.

At one time, people were advised to NOT eat the fish caught in the Spokane River drainage...including Lake Coeur d'Alene...or to limit themselves to no more than 1-2 fish per month because of the heavy metal contamination in the waterways.

Had a talk with our librarian, she gets random calls from people demanding we remove books, some we have and some we don't. I asked her what she does. She simply refers them to the principle (who is conservative), but doesn't tolerate this crap. Most aren't even associated with our school or any other as far as we know. This is an extremely loud minority that think issues exist where they don't. Books banned to date .. zero and yes we are public charter school in SE Idaho.

edit: Last school year my 20 year old son was an educational aid in one of the lower grades, he had to sub for the teacher one day and actually had to read Ruby Bridges to the class and had a discussion about discrimination and the civil rights movement. We aren't quite as backwards as some would like to think. yeah, we have some crazies, but most are 'mormon conservatives'. Yeah, the idiots voted for Trump, but most don't like him and only voted for him because they think dems are worse or simply because he had a (R) on the ballot. -signed, a left leaning liberal born and living in a red state and working in a pretty balanced charter school.

I drove through Bonner's Ferry last month and they had signs along the road that said "Recall the library, end grooming of our children" or something similar. Sick shit. Real groomers probably love that everyone is looking at books as the issue instead of them now.

I appreciate that you're fighting the good fight there. I'm not going to move there for reasons but I know there are folks like you in the proverbial trenches in all the red states.

I should also point out, the northern part of the state is very different than the southern part. We are very geographically separated by the Idaho primitive area. While our part of the state has more in common with Utah they are more like Montana and eastern Washington. We might as well be two different states. They are also known for the neo Nazis and white supremacists'.

Idaho people hate anyone with reasonable 21st century values, and I hear they are armed, and racist, too. Better just abandon them to rot in their own ignorance.

Where are you at? I lived in Post Falls for a while, just south of Salmon, west (up river) from Clayton, and in Pocatello. (actually Chubbuck)

People need to find better hobbies.

OMG, can you imagine filling your spare time with this bullshit?

Pocatello / Chubbuck area. Have lived here my whole life other than 5 years in the Army. Within 5 years we are planning on buying a house in coastal Oregon and retiring in about 10. For a while we plan on having a house here as well as there.

Yeah it's ridiculous, but I guess my point in posting, it's not gaining as much ground as the media might claim. Sure, maybe in little pockets. Our Lt Governor (a real piece of work) ran on this whole issue and got her ass handed to her in the primaries. So did a lot of other people running on CRT and book banning. Now with Bundy running as an independent and splitting the conservative vote we might actually have a shot at a dem governor this year.

Cool. I worked at the former Bucyrus-Erie/Naval gun plant on Poleline building piping modules for the Exxon Labarge, Wyoming gasification project.

It's still there, a lot of smaller businesses have sprung up in those facilities.

Yeah, I'm in a different state, but similar story.

Things were already getting nutty before covid, but that really brought out all the cranks and conspiracy theorists that feel school board meetings are the appropriate venue to dump their crazy onto.

Mind you, many are not even parents with kids in the schools, just weirdos that can be given airtime to make outrageous claims and demands.

My kids can't be done with school fast enough...
