IDE cables

I'm rearanging the drives in my pc and may need longer than usual (>18") IDE cables to connect to the hard drives(2). The drives are ATA66 and ATA100. Is there any max length restriction on IDE cables? Can the drive connectors be repositioned at different points on the cable to better fit the drive locations in the case? Is there any site that sells the ribbon cable and connectors separately so that you can make your own cables?

i've been running 36 inch IDE cables on my ata100 drives for almost 2 years now. technically, there is a max length, but i have never heard of any problems running up to about 36 inches

edit: oh yeah, you can buy longer cables in lots of stores and online...making your own might be annoying

oooh. good point. i must've had a brain fart. i actually use the 36'ers on my ata33 cd-roms and stuff

i run the normal 18 inch ata100 ide's. sorry

but i can guarantee you that a 24 inch ata100 cablE (if you can find ones, which you probably can) would work just fine

would 6 inches be enough extra room?

I've had problems like that as well, especially when trying to outfit a full tower case. I have had several towers and enjoy some extra space when trying to work around in it, but I have some internal bays that just won't let me use them cause my cables are too short. I would suggest getting some of those new round cables which come in all lengths like 18, 24, and I've even seen 36" which says it's ata100/133 so I'll have to check and get back to ya.
