IDE Controller problem

I do not have tech skills, so need help in figuring out problem with Primary IDE Controller in our Gateway laptop computer. In device manager, it shows the problem. "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)" All troubleshooting, uninstallling, reinstalling, etc. does not help. Any ideas what to do?

Also, would this affect the performance of PC card slot. (will not work)

Is that under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, under Primary IDE Channel in your device manager? What model is your laptop? OS? Is there anything else wrong with any another devices in your list of devices? Have you installed anything lately, hardware or software? How big is your drive?

How big is your drive? If you mean Hard Drive - 9.36 GB, 1.96 GB free

IRQ, memory addresses, ei resources are suppose to be assigned automatically. I would enter your BIOS make sure all resources are being assigned automatically. Also it could be that the mini pci slot is conflicting with it, taking resources before it, hence nothing available for it. Go here, make sure all your drivers are the latest. Also check the FAQs.

Are you actually experiencing any issues, or is it just the annoying device manager?

thanks for giving me this info. It will take a while for me to actually follow the suggestions........

The issues that I am having are that we cannot utilize the PC card slot for using wireless card, or utilize the PC card slot with the compact flash memory card adapter. None of these will work. CD-Rom drive will not work either, but I think that the drive itself is dead.

I believe the faqs mention installing it correctly. What happens when you insert something in it? Does it hint that it is connecting physically?
