I'm looking to add more drives to my computer, by way of an IDE controller. I remember reading that even the newest DVD and CD-RW drives are slower than ATA66. Is this true? If so, do I need to buy an ATA100 or ATA133?
I am not 100% on this, but I thought that only hard drives should be added to pci ide controllers. I remember my roomate having tons of problems when he tried to use one with his cdrw. You might have to suffle your drives arounds so that only harddrives are on the controller.
You should buy an ATA 100 controller since nothing ever takes the advantage of ATA 133. It is only a marketing gimmik. ATA 100 will be fine especially if you are using CD-Roms on it. If you get a Maxtor ATA 133 and put it on it you might as well get the ATA 133.

Yes, ATA-Ide controllers can support any ide devices (optical or hard drives, zip, etc).
I would look at the Promise ide controllers. They are affordable and some of the best.
I just bought an ATA-133 ide card this summer from newegg for around $30.
