IDE or SCSI Faster or Faster

Ok here?s the question, which would be faster 2 - 7200 ide drives striped in raid 0, or a single scsi 10,000 rpm 8meg cache? I?m talking single user system. With the price of scsi not being all that out of reach and the hard drive still being the albatross of the desk top computers I figured I?d get some input for the crowd. I also may be starting some heated debate but what the hey that?s what makes these fourms fun?

P.S. I just signed in to the fourms with my e-mail, I was wondering why it did not work. Molson Ice and memory I wonder if there is a correlation?

Depends on what you are doing. For "average" use, I'd opt for the 10K rpm SCSI. For disk-intensive, server/database work, I'd opt for the SCSI. For video editting, I'd opt for the RAID 0 IDE. The SCSI will beat the RAID IDE drives silly in terms of seek peformance, but the RAID drive will beat the SCSI pretty convincingly in terms of transfer rate. Seek times are generally more important.

i'd go with the single scsi as well. overall system performance will be better with a fast 10k. mithrandir summed it up quite nicely.

Well said mithrandir. The only issue I would take is the comment that RAID-0'd IDE would beat single SCSi convincingly. With the advent of 15K drives like X15-2 which transfer at >70MB/sec the advantage of a 2drive IDE going at 35MB/s each is dwindling. Add this to the fact that RAID 0 acceleration only occurs when the read size in greater than the stripe size and you should actually see better performance with the 15K SCSI unless you were pushing lots of small IO's. The single SCSI goes at 70MB/s reguardless of the request size. Even my 10K Fujitsu transfers at around 60MB/sec. The price of admission to x15-2 vs 2 IDE's is certainly different though.....
