The topic sort of explains it. I'm building my first PC and was wondering which will be better for me to wok with in terms of hard drives?

Thanks for any help

Get SATA, they both perform as well but the thinner cables are easier to deal with plus sata is the future and pata is the past.

I say SATA as well. But be careful, the connectors are much more fragile on SATA and for the most part, neither the drive or cable mfr's have done anything about it. Get SATA cables with the locking clips on them if your mobo doesn't come with that type - at least that helps a bit at keeping the connectors from falling out... Right angle connectors almost always reduce stress on the drive end - perhaps also on the mobo end depending on your particular arrangement - you can get 'em with right-angle on one or both ends.

I read that the SATA CD/DVD drives had some compatibility issues. I don't remember the specifics, but do some research before you decide for sure.

I preferred to use the IDE ports for the CD/DVD drives, saving the SATA ports for hard drives and creating my RAID array.

If you have extra SATA ports, maybe that's not an issue.

IDE is still a safer bet for optical drives due to myriad problems with current SATA models, but you should only consider SATA II HD's for any new system purchase.. aside from the already mentioned cable advantages, they are slightly faster & also seem much less prone to disk errors.

Technically, SATA drives are also IDE - so the current distinction would be PATA vs. SATA.

if your mobo has 4 SATA ports, then go with it. Last HD i bought was PATA, because I had no SATA ports left.
