IDE woes

Building a new system....it is a slow build, but ran into a problem. I have the Chaintech ZNF3-150, but have yet to purchase memory or processor, like I said...a slow build. Today I get in a NEC 8x DVD burner put it in the case and
it powers up, cool I think. So now I start routing the IDE cable to it, tried all 3 IDE ports, as soon as I plug in the
drive, it loses power. I was confused, tried another cable, different power connector, and different ports, all with
the same results. Take the DVD drive out of my running machine, and bam same thing when I hook it up, powers
up fine without IDE cable, dies with it plugged in. Now, I don't have a processor or memory in the board yet so this
may be the cause of the problem, I'm hoping someone says yes, but if not, did I receive a bad motherboard. Here
are the planned specs :

Chaintech ZNF3-150 have
2 x 512mb Mushkin 4000
A64 3200+
120 GB SATA Maxtor have
8x NEC DVD-+RW have
470w Enermax Whisper have
ATI AIW 9800 Pro

everything else I have is cosmetic so no need to bore you with that

Did some more troubleshooting....took MB out of case, tried new cables, new power supply, different drive, with no power to the MB, and with the IDE cable plugged in, the drive won't power up, unhook the cable, and it powers up. Looks like I got a bum MB.....

I have the same board, but I don't do that kind of testing, so I don't know what I should expect

Maybe your hardrive jumper setting is wrong. I use master-slave, not cable select.

I have the drive set to master....it is the only IDE device in the system

IT REALLY SOUNDS LIKE A SHORT IN THE DVD BURNER NOT THE MB

If you're hot-plugging the drives while the system is running... don't do that. If you don't have a bad board, you probably will end up with one, if you hot-plug stuff like that. Suggestion: leave it alone until the rest of the parts arrive.

As he ^ said, hot plugging stuff in is generally contraindicated, and if you've done so, your board and probably other components are likely now non-functional.
