I met a guy with a Ph.D in CS from Boston U. Graduated top of his class too. He was a huge prick. Didn't have any social skills at all. He was such an ass too. Looked down at every body he met.

How many 1600-ers are there though? Can't be more than a dozen.

Oh, how wrong you are. In my group of friends in high school, there was a

1) 1600 (SAT) and 36 (ACT)
2) 1580 (SAT) and 36 (ACT)
3) I got a 1550 on my SATs.

There are probably a few hundred students who get a 1600 on their SAT. I don't know how many score 1600 and a 36, but that friend of mine has to be one of less than ten in the country. BTW, his birthday was today, so wish him a happy birthday.

About 1 out of every 3000 people that take the SAT's score perfect (under the new 2400 system). About 2,000,000 people take the SAT every year, so that's about 666 perfect scores a year. Roughly. About 1,000,000 people take the ACT's every year and around 1% of those score higher than 31. I was unable to find more specific info than that on the ACT. If we assume even a moderately sloped line for those scores we can infer that about 100-300 people score perfect. That makes it probably that around that number (since it's the lesser of the two) score perfect on both. So, say, 50-250 per year.

Remember that if you score very high on one, you're likely to score very high on the other. Also, you can take tests multiple times, so it's possible to get a perfect score on one the first time, and on the other the second time, etc.

As for the 'genius' bit, while intelligence helps a great deal in getting good grades, the two are related by correlation, not causation. You can get perfect grades and test scores and not be even a single SD above norm on IQ, while persons 4 or more SD's above average might receive only average grades or even failing ones (though they're likely to still score very well on standardized tests). Grades are about a heck of a lot more than knowledge or intelligence.

I met many geniuses at Cal--many with geek egos. One guy who won a US math medal as a Sr. in high school wore a cape to school...I kid you not!

He also shaved his eye brows one semester to distinguish himself from the mortals.

Man, I pwned myself on my ACT's. Scored like 31,33, 34, 30 in the first sections.. and a 19 in science cuz I feel asleep, bringing my score to a 29

Edit - and i dont buy the 1% above 30. I could name about 5% of my graduating class that got above 31.

That's from the testing service. 99th percentile begins at 32. Remember that percentile is fluid, it changes after each batch of tests (or at least it has the potential to). Also remember that we're talking about national averages, so what one school does is largely irrelevant. I'm sure many schools have no one that scores that high, so it all balances out. Finally, that figure is for the final overall score, not the subsection scores.

Yes, a true genius.

He's probably a FOB with crappy English. Note that almost all comments are from Math, Science, or Engineering classes.

there was a guy like this in my high school

transfered from china for the last year

the math teachers ended up photocopying his tests and giving them to us as solution papers

no eraser marks, his work was like a textbook

and I don't think acing the ACT's are that rare, our school had around 5 in a 2 year span (and its a canadian school)
