Ideas on uses for HP Touchpad

I just ordered a Kindle Fire HD 7" for traveling which leaves my 32gb Touchpad without a home. Before you say bad things about the Kindle know that I believe it will fit my usage better than the Touchpad, which has been sitting, unused on it's touchstone for months.

But now I'm asking ATOT for ideas on what to do with the Touchpad, apart from selling it though that is an option. I was thinking about turning it into a kitchen device for playing music, video, and looking up recipes. Any other grand ideas? Or should I just sell the thing, someone else is bound to get more use out of it than me.

Thanks!

Install Android on it

Already done, it currently dual boots using the Cyanogen android 4.0 mod. Apart from a non functional webcam and some issues with wifi forgetting to connect at wake-up it seems to work pretty well.

First option, sell it.

Second option is use it, always plugged in, as digital picture frame and weather, etc.

I think it is the presentation mode Touchpad offers, but forgot actual name HP gives it.

Could also get something like iCade and turn it into retro video game arcade if you can find mame4all emulator or something like that.

I sold mine a few weeks ago.

What did you get for it? I have the tablet itself (in good condition), unopened case, used touchstone, and unopened wall charger. I also have the bluetooth keyboard for it (unused) but I kinda want to keep that for other tablets. If I can't figure out a good use for it I'll have to sell it all.

iCade sounds fun. So does the presentation mode thing, I guess I could just use it as a picture frame. Seems like a waste for a fully functional tablet but I suppose thats better than nothing.

Digital picture frames are pretty expensive. No way I would sell my Touchpads.

I guess they are pricey, I've just never seen a need for one but now that you mention it having that downstairs would look nice. hmmmm.....

I'm in the same boat. Though I did shatter the digitizer and had to replace it. I don't imagine that would help with selling it. I don't have a tablet to replace with it, I just realized I have zero need for a tablet. I was gung-ho on picking up a new W8 tablet, but I realized a laptop is so much more useful. The only thing I use my Touchpad for is to play chess.

Newer ROMs seem to have fixed this.

Yeah, digital picture frames are really expensive still. So I don't use my Touchpad all that much, more to do with the limited uses of a tablet really... but what I do use it for now is to play some music and as a picture frame.

I use the music when I'm sleeping to help me and even occasionally use a few aps like weather etc.

For the cheap price I paid when I got it, there's no way I'd sell it. I really wouldn't be able to use the money from selling it to buy other gadgets to replace what it does and come out ahead.

Yeah its handy to have a beater that I can let the kids watch videos on and not worry too much about them dropping it.

I think the W8 tablets will be the first to actually challenge the laptop in terms of usability. I know my wife is all about getting one and can see the university she works at adopting them for class room and library usage.

Interesting, looks like it might be time to update then.

I hope so. Some of the w8 stuff seem to have solid keyboard docks to go along with them. Maybe they will be the happy medium. My eyes are gazing over at the Surface and the Thinkpad tablet. If only my 6 year old Thinkpad would die already, I'd have a great reason to upgrade.

On topic, I may move my Touchpad into the car. The view angles suck, but it might be pretty cool tethered to my phone. It'd be even cooler if Bluetooth GPS modules work with it. I'll have to look into this.

I just bought a Transformer tf300t & sold my Touchpad with case & touchstone for $180 shipped.
Prior to selling, I used it as a media consumption device: Comic reader, Movie player, & e-reader. Plus, it was located in my bathroom

I've been using the TP as a GPS since late January with a Canmore GT-750(L) Bluetooth GPS Data Logger . Apps are Bluetooth GPS Pro ( necessary to sync with the TPs bluetooth) and GPS apps would be MapQuest, Google Maps, Navigon or Sygic (the last 2 my preference).
Works like a charm, I can enter my destination and tells me distance (miles/km), gives me ETA, speed I'm driving (mph/km), warns of Red light camera intersections, voice turn by turn navigation. Forgot how to set it to give a 3D-like view. Hard to get lost with this one.

I sold mine for $200 with case, touchstone, and charger about 6 weeks ago. Before that I had been using it as a bathroom reader with CM9 nightlies on it.

it dies if i don't touch it for a few days

I had a Touchpad & was totally unimpressed with it simply because of how heavy it was. You could keep it as a kitchen device or on the coffee table to use to surf the web from the sofa. I'd either sell it or gift a loved one with it.

Geekbabe! It's been a LONG time. Good to see you.

I agree with the comments above - it has value as a basic web browser, photo display, etc (and in Android mode, also can be used to control networked components with apps). I wouldn't fire sell it.

I am a little disappointed that the camera has never been functional in CM9 forward. I have sort of given up expectations on that, and this device is awesome as a cheap skype videconferencing tablet. Also, it is great to watch movies in bed streaming with the Plex app.

They are pretty 'chunky' arent they?
