Hello all,

I am having a problem with my ideq 200v system. It is old I know and it's been
working perfectly for me for over a year now. It is only in the past week that
I've noticed this problem. Bacially, I have a Gainward 5700 in the AGP slot and
the fan on the video card is not moving at all. So the card get very hot after
a certain period and causes the box to crash (this is only my theory).

The SSF has a 200V PSU. It sounds small but it was working OK.

Any input much appreciated.

You say this is your theory... Have you observed that the fan is not moving at all? Does it seem to be obstructed? Try compressed air to remove and dust that may be preventing it from turning.

When the machine crashes waht exactly happens? Does it just power off? Does it lock up at a certain screen? Do you seem to be doing the same thing when the machine locks up or is it random?

Just from what I know now if you are good with your current level of graphics you could easily just order a new card around those specs for pretty cheap. A 5700 is almost pennies now a days. Most of the FX series of cards were kind of bad perofrmers though. I would recommend something like this...

Radeon 9600 for $69 from newegg

It has a passive cooler so you don't run into this again and should perform better then the 5700 for not a whole lot of money. You could of course look around at other vendors for a deal. I just pulled the first thing form newegg that fit as a solution because they are reputable and there site is easy to use to find things.

I have the exact same card, failed fan and all. I ended up buying a replacement fan from Newegg, worked fine. Until it came, I ran the computer without its top and had a box fan blowing on it. Ghetto, but it worked.

Any suggestion for a budget video card? I don't do a lot of gaming. I run Linux so would like
to stay away from ATI. Is the 6200 series any good?

It's _really_ not hard to replace that fan. Only tool you need is a pair of pliars to assist with getting the heatsink off (some tabs in the back that need to be held together and then pushed through and out of the card). Buying a new card is kind of an expensive solution.

The 6200 series will be fine if you dont do a whole lot of 3d gaming. The 6200 series is sort of a hybrid type card with some memory on the card and some grabbed from system ram. If you run recent 3d games this can be a huge negative. If you run office apps and older 3d games it should be fine. I've only ever dabbled in linux but I know the driver support for hardware can some times be a little rough so I would make sure you can get good drivers for your distribution before buying a new card.

Erwos brought up a good point as well. If you can swap the fan on the card, that would be a much cheaper solution. I would pull your card and see if the heat sink can be replaced before you order a replacement though. Some of the heatsinks are glued on making them hard to replace them without killing the card.
