Here's something that's interesting:

The next major feature of the Core micro-architecture is that now all 128-bit SSE instructions will execute in a single cycle. The single cycle latency for all SSE instructions should offer some pretty hefty gains in any applications that make extensive use of SSE. Rattner was not specific as to whether or not this applied to SSE2/3 instructions, or just instructions included in the original SSE spec.

Now first, I think Intel actually meant single cycle SSE throughput not latency because it would be just impossible to attain 1 cycle latency. Currently, if you execute a SSE multiply, it starts hte lower 64bits in one cycle and the other 64bits in the next cycle. This really sucks so I'm glad they're finally improving this.

AMD has recently said that they were doubling the amount of FP resource on their K8L and there was a lot of speculation over at aces and on the Inquirer that what AMD meant was that SSE would be capable of acting on the whole SSE register instead of just half the register. It was speculated that AMD would have a FP power advantage over intel with the K8L but if the Conroe will have SSE 1t throughput, this means that Intel will have appromixately the same level of speed as AMD in FP. However, AMD may retain a modest edge since it has 2 FP pipelines instead of Conroe's 1.

yeah, Conroe and Woodcrests SpecFP scores are pretty good, but not as crazy good as their SpecInt scores.

Intel mentioned Conroe will consume 40% less power than Pentium D950. With C-1 stepping Pentium D950 will consume 95watts, so Conroe should consume only 57 watts. Thats even less than 65w tdp that's being tagged to conroe. if its 40% less than current stepping ( then its 130w - 40% = 78watts),it's ugly.

AMD is releasing a 35 watt desktop version of the x2 along with the x2 turion but thats nothing compared to these processors. These were what apple was looking at when it made the switch to intel. All i can say is that I want one. Guess I should sell my opty now.

Why ?
Later edit: stay tuned, it seems Anand will post some fresh benchies

I want to see those benchmarks. It looks like from everything I seen that these destroy the best pentium Ds and use a tone less power.

Intel claims 80% boost in specint vs a 2.8ghz xeon x2. For those too lazy to look it up, that would be a 2867 specint base score if intel is telling the truth. That's a big 'if' but fortunately not nearly as big as an Apple 'if'.

Woodcrest has a SpecInt Score of 2800, and Conroe XE of just under 3000, it was released several days ago...

What are FX57 and FX60 SpecInt scores.

Call me an AMD fanboy (I don't care) but I haven't bought Intel since my 80286 16MHz and I don't ever plan to, even if they're 800x faster than AMD. Intel's business practices disgust me. I stuck w/ AMD when the K5 and K6 was called "crap" but it worked well enough for me. And when the Athlon came out, look who jumped on the bandwagon. Guess everyone's jumping ship again! Not me... AMD will come out with something in a year or so and everyone will be back again.

Sorry that was off topic. But to the topic, yeah, sure they seem fast.. waiting to see some reviews out of curiousity even if I won't buy one.

IF Intel comes out with a better processor then AMD and you decide not to buy it just becasue you like AMD more then yeah i'll call you an AMD fanboy...

What is the point of having company loyalty like that?, just buy whichever is better. Right now its AMD 90% of the time, if Conroe changes that then people should buy Intel.

"benchmarks" imply more then one. And what you have there is nothing but a pretty picture that says Conroe is better then Presler. Its nothing but PR hype, even Intel says that Conroe wont beat PRelser by nearly that much most of the time. Wait till we get numbers from benchmarks people actually use, and AMD numbers are included until you start saying benchmakrs are up...

 its IDF... not a test lab.

In the AT article it says they are "off to benchmark conroe ourselves now" so those numbers will be in the thread too when they are available.

Those benchmarks are extremely impressive, especially for a part thats still months from launch and can improve. 40% over a 2.8ghz X-2 in F.E.A.R. is just astounding.
