IDTech 5 should die and so should MEgatextures.

The only time this ever worked correctly was oddly when i had an i5 2500k and a GTX 480 for RAGE.

I attempted to play RAGE again, on Phenom II + GTX 580, this resulted in way worse texture streaming.
The Xeon i have now + GTX 670, still the same problem, yet the benchmark ran a lot faster on the Xeon and 670 system, the 580 was just ahead over the 480 system.

Totally unoptimised and never scale well with hardware.

Wolfenstein the new order, same problem.

Now with this game i played it originally with a Radeon 7770, worst thing ever, had to drop to 480P on low to get a smoothish game... yet barely anything on screen was taxing the GPU.

Tries again with a GTX 670, can run in 1080P but not without some big frame drops for no reason, plus the game is so inconsistent graphically.

DOOM 2016, oh this pile of shit... LMAO.

People harp on about how greatly optimised this game is, sadly they all seem to forget they are running way above average hardware that exceeds the system requirements for DOOM.

Let's try DOOM on a GTX 670, the minimum requirement.

Trash optimization, runs terrible for no reason.

Image gallery to prove how bad this is.

2FPS difference on low vs high at 1080P.

10FPS difference from 1080P to 480P.

And this is what todays folk call amazing optimisation, it makes me laugh.

None of the IDTech5 engine games scale with hardware, they simply require brute force which not everyone can afford...

And Wolfenstein and RAGE will still run like horse shit even on superior hardware lol.

Absolute joke.

Can you name a recent game that uses it?

PRETTY SURE IT'S ALREADY DEAD.

I can imagine if you are not in the position to upgrade once every few years that it does seem useless when new more taxing games come out.
But that is how it is. More demanding games come out (Ignoring the possible optimizations that may help with performance that are not always done).
For the megatexture issues many people complain about. I never experienced any texture pop in, in wolfenstein new order. But i do have the game installed on a ssd. That might make the difference for me.
And it seems that steam does deliver the latest updates and patches.
It is just that the developers and publishers do not care much for their customers.

I notice you run opengl.
How much does vulcan make difference for those older cards in the same level ?
Positive ? negative ?
Nothing at all ?

There are few games that give a consistently good experience at minimum spec. Prey might, but then you have people complaining about the graphics looking dated (doesn't bother me much, but the graphics certainly are average at best). I don't know how much you can blame the engine. More people have had performance issues with Frostbite, CryEngine, and Creation Engine than IDTech 5, from what I've seen.

IMO Frostbite and Cryengine are usually good performance. I've come to expect it with them.

Doom 2016 on an i5 6500, GTX 660 (not Ti), 2133MHz DDR4. From Ultra to Low in the same area you ran using OpenGL at 1200p went from 33FPS to 46FPS.

You have a higher clocked processor and a better GPU. Try wiping your drivers with DDU and reinstalling?

Mega texture streaming is a cool technology when it works well, but has been rife with problems over various different hardware architectures. I enjoyed Rage and for the most part it worked OK for me, and DOOM looks and plays amazing, at a decent frame rate, even at 4k so...

If you have low end hardware it's not going to run amazing but it'll give you a better looking game than any other competing texturing method, it was basically designed for low memory systems like consoles or low end GPUs.

OP, what current games do run well on your setup?

Everything.

People seem to not understand what i am saying, 10FPS from 1080P to 480P, this is only a DOOM thing, GPU pegged at 99% on low at 480P?? really?

If i look elsewhere i hit the framecap of 200FPS.

Even mankind divided runs far more consistent on medium with bells and whistled and TAA.

First time I ever saw someone complain about Doom's performance

Man ain't this the truth. Doom 2016 is one of the most optimized titles of all time, and the megatexture implementation aka virtual textures is much more advanced than it was in games like Rage. With the latest NVidia drivers and Vulkan runtime libraries I don't see any texture streaming or pop in at all on nightmare settings.

...And then complain about performance. #SeemsLegit

If you need an idea for your next trick, how about installing Windows 10 on a machine with a 1 GHz, single-core CPU and 1 GB of RAM (the minimum requirements for 32-bit) and then wondering why it's a dog?

Are you running the newest drivers? Although since nVidia has dropped support for that card, not sure they did updates for that game with that card. But either way, Doom is one of the most optimized games made in recent history.

As shown above, somebody else with a similar setup runs the game fine. And thats with a five year old GPU, which shows how well the game is optimized.

Well, i finally got around to examine the issue with megatextures and idtech5. And it is true what they say about megatextures being great for scenery but wortheless for close up views. In wolfenstein new order the environment looks great. But as soon as one zooms in at for example the walls, it just looks horrible out focus and unsharp. Like a dx7 game. With more common techniques, the textures that are used to build the walls for example are replaced with textures that have more detail the closer one comes to a wall. I wonder how they solved this with idtech 6.
And the jagged edges are everywhere in the game, anti-aliasing is not present and at least not available as a setting in the game. Maybe through the command console, have not tried that.

It will sound rude but OP said it worked OK with his lesser machine and is now complaining it works worse with a better machine. I get the complaint, but with several people posting screenshots etc showing that it does run just fine on rigs in the "complaint" range it should be pretty clear OP has an issue, be it hardware or ? its not the game, if he doesn't want to take advice of posters, I think his mind is made up. I get that too, way back in the EQ days (yep im so old i remember when gold box games where cool) i upgraded and EQ also updated a that same time, and all the sudden it played like shit. EQ tech support was no help, etc.. after almost 8 months (I learned about withdrawal symptoms those 8 months), surprise, surprise a video card driver was found to have an issue with specific hardware and It solved my problem, but I sure thought EQ update had screwed me and would have made the same post and ignored everybody else. I have an Old PC (8 years plus old) that seems to play Rage fine, though i was no fan of the texture issues it had when it came out, and the game is pretty much crap , none of the current games (wolf, evil within, or new doom) has ran bad on my machines. Funny somebody mentioned far cry, since Carmack left ID one of the lead devs on the Farcry engine has been the main guy on the id rendering engine. I wouldn't have even commented but i have been playing Wolf the last 2 days, i must not stop and look at shit enough, walls, rocks pretty blah, but most anything else (uniforms, beds, lockers, machinery) all look fine to me.. but like i say in a FPS i seldom stop an ponder its beauty.. last time i did that was the Original Far Cry, that game was something when it came out.
