I don't know where else in the forums to ask this...

IE is exhibiting a new behaviour that it has never done before, and it's driving me up a wall. Cause is unknown, but probably one of the XP updates or registry hiccup.

Normal:

1) Manually running IE, first instance of IE opens where you last left it. Second instance of IE opens a bit lower and to the right of that.

2) Click on a link in an email or document, same thing -- first instance opens where you last closed IE. Second instance will be lower and to the right of that.

Now the following happens:

1) Manually running IE, same scenario as number 1 above. This is OK.

2) Click on a link in an email or document, the first instance has stopped opening where I last left it. It now always opens down and to the right. I say "no". Move it to where it should be, close it, then click on the link again...and IE opens down and to the right of where it's supposed to be. :disgust:

There must be a way to stop this behaviour.

Put this into a new text document. Name it something.reg and then run it. This will reset it to default.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"Window_Placement"=-

evil, I'm using Firefox to post this

Kappo, that reg fix is for a different problem (but I did try it -- no luck). I guess I need a way to reset how IE opens when you click on a link in an email or document.

try Opera. It's fast, free, and has many advanced features. It also has the quick reply feature here in AnandTech that i don't see in IE which really helps.

IE has it, try clicking the quick reply icon at the bottom to bring it up.

Opera has always been my favorite. Far more superior than IE. IMO.

I use Opera, for many years now. It used to be that there were a number of things that IE did that it seemed Opera didn't, like pages that wouldn't work except in IE, so I just got out IE when that happened. Now with v. 8.5 that hardly ever happens, and it's so smooth and has so many nice little helpful features. Now that it's fully free I can't help urging you to try it.
