Win XP home edition sp1 - patched except for sp2. anti-virus up to date and scanned.
I did turn off anti-virus while installing to make sure it wasnot causing the problem.
IE crashes when you try and open it, it pops up the little "do you want to send this error message to MS"

First I tried to just reinstall it, crash.
I downloaded the latest version and installed it, crash.

I then go into add remove programs and removed it. I rebooted, Windows doesnot load. At the point its about to finish loading and auto login the user an error comes up saying the login.dll (forgot exact name) is missing or corrupt hit enter to reboot. I reboot into safe mode, gets to the point its about to login and samething. Upon rebooting one more time, I use the "last known good" - holy cow it worked, windows came back up. After 5yrs+ this is the first time last known good actually worked

Well back to square one, IE is loaded as it was in the previous postion. However it keeps crashing and I cannot seem to reinstall it. I have also gone back almost a month in system restore but nothing seems to work. Is there anyway to get IE back without formating and reinstalling the OS?

Yes I know, I use Firefox myself however the wife hates it and wants her IE back

thx

Your IE probably got compromise. Try to d/l adware or spybot with the latest updates and see if it pickups anything.

Try logging in as admin and delete her profile. This has worked for me before.

Note: Make sure to backup user's documents, favorites, .etc.

One thing we try at work is to force IE to run through a repair. Here is what you do:

click Start> click Run and type
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

Type it exactly like this (or copy and paste) and it will ask you if you want to repair IE. Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't, but it's worth a try!

Have you checked for spyware? Also, try unchecking "Enable third party browser extensions" in the advanced tab of Internet Options, that can help sometimes.
