Hey all.

Just downloaded & installed IE7. However, it doesn't appear to support tabs. CTRL+T doesn't do anything. I looked in Tools -> Options -> Advanced to see if I need to click something to enable tabbed browsing, but I didn't see any options in there.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

Okay, under Tools -> Internet Options -> General -> Tabs Settings, "Enable Tabbed Browsing" is definitely checked.

Still, can't open any new tabs. File -> New doesn't even give me the option of opening a new tab.

Help!

Thanks for the response.

I did try restarting the computer after installing. No help.

I have uninstalled IE7 and reinstalled it, and it didn't solve the problem.

I then did a system restore back to before when I originally installed IE7. I then tried re-installing IE7. Still no fix.

Here's a picture of my IE7:

A couple of things to notice. First, the about window says copyright Microsoft 1995-2004. I saw someone else's IE7 today and it had copyright 2006 there. Also, notice the IE icon on my desktop: It's still the old IE6 icon, not the new IE7!

I'm perplexed. Anyone?

Do you have any anti-virus software running? If so disable it before you install IE7.

Nope, no anti-virus software on the computer at all.

Really, it looks exactly like IE6, except it has some new menu items. But the rest is exactly the same.

Yes, I was just going to say the image you provided appears to be IE6. IE7, as you may know, looks quite different from IE6. To see what it looks like and get some info on it, visit http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie7/tour/fre/default.mspx

Even your "About Internet Explorer" is the IE6 version. For IE7, it should look like this:

Clearly, you've got a funky installation there. At the moment, I don't know what would have caused that.

Edit: What firewall did you have running when you downloaded IE7? I read one Internet source which advised disabling third-party firewalls and enabling Windows firewall during the download and installation of IE7.

By the way, you do have Win XP SP2, right?

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, I do have XP SP2.

I don't have any firewalls on my computer. For what it's worth, I also did not have the Windows firewall enabled. But you wouldn't expect that something like a disabled firewall would cause a messed up installation of IE7, would you?

No, I don't think so.

How do you connect to the Internet? A dialup connection? DSL? Cable? Do you use a router?

Why no anti-virus software or firewall? Do you use any adware and spyware removal tools?

That looks like IE6 - nothing like IE7 whatsoever. Something clearly went wrong during installation. Try uninstalling IE7 again (reboot if necessary). Then uninstall IE6 (from Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components). Reinstall IE6 and re-download IE7 from Microsoft's site. Hopefully that will take care of the problem.

Thanks for the responses!

I connect to the internet through a router & cable modem. I also turned on the Windows firewall and tried to reinstall IE7. No help.

I tried uninstalling IE7 and reinstalling again, to no avail.

I also tried uninstalling IE6, then reinstalling it and IE7. Still no luck!

I really don't know why I'd have so much trouble installing IE7.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

hmm, this happened to me when I installed it on another newly-reformatted system (NOTE!: a hacked copy of XP).

After a whole day's worth of trying crap out (reinstalling, installing, regedit, system restore), nothing worked. Well, system restore came close, and when I reinstalled IE7, the new interface came up, but the tabs didn't work.
I had to reformat to remedy it. This is a toughy since IE7 runs within the windows shell, so once that goes, you have to reformat.

Dan & John, thanks for the help.

Unfortunately, I bought this laptop from IBM a couple years ago, and they did not provide me with a Windows XP CD. I really hate the manufacturers who do this, especially when some problem like this pops up.

I'll look through the documentation that came with the laptop and see if I can find anything about "repairing the installation." But I would tend to agree with both of you -- it sounds like something is borked within my XP installation.

You can also use an OEM copy of XP Home to do the repair. Maybe you know someone with a copy that you can "borrow"?
