IEEE1394 Connection question

I've got an Antec case that has a front firewire port, and a firewire interface card. Here's the rub - the header from the case is 6 individual labelled pins, and the firewire controller has an internal jack that takes a standard 6 pin firewire cable. Seems kinda strange that the internal jack would have a standard cable plug and not a pinout. Anyhow, does anyone know of a way I could somehow connect my front port to the card itself? Thanks!

hi,
the pins of the cable from the case are labeled as to which connection they are.
your motherboard header pin out is labeled (or should be) in the motherboard manual.
just connect the cable connectors to the right pins
i think that the case makers do this because the different motherboard makers dont always use the same pinout on their 6 pin headers.
good luck

Foofoo,
Thanks for the suggestion, but my mobo doesn't have firewire onboard. I got an Intel D845PEBT2 mobo, which I thought would have firewire onboard, but apparently the boxed version does not have it. Anyhow, I have a firewire card that I got a couple of years ago when I got Pinnacle StudioDV. It's got 2 external 6 pin firewire plugs, and the another one on the inside. Problem is that it's the plug and not just a header. Perhaps someone would know where I could get a plug I can put in there that might lead out to just the numbered pins. I can find out what each pin is without too many problems, but I don't want to destroy a firewire cable to pull it off. Or perhaps a 6 pin (is it male or female?) plug w/o wires that I can hook up to the case header.

Any suggestions?

hi,
duh, i re-read your post and my mistake.
i think you are on the right path looking for a connector that you can plug the wire ends into.
this one from digikey
here
looks right.
the part number is AE7346-ND and it's $1.90 + ship but i think there might be a minimum order.
the solder pins of the connector should fit your individual connectors on the end of the cable.
good luck

just realized that with this solution, you will need a cable too to jump between the 2 female sockets. they are ~$15 at googlegear and such. not the cheapest solution, but it should work.

I wonder if I could just find a 6 pin male plug that I could plug the leads from the front panel header right into, and then insert that right into the female plug on the internal card...hmm...

Chris....keep us posted if you get this figured out. I've been wanting to do the same, and trying to find a solution for us as well, in the next couple weeks comin up, I'd like to get a case with front ports as well, I wonder if this also varies from case to case, you'd think that each case manufacturer has it's own way of connecting front ports.

Trashman,
This case I've got - Antec Performance Plus SX835II, is a nice case, with 2 USB and a firewire connection right up front. I'll tell you, though, that the headers are designed for maximum flexibility but can be a pain - each wire has it's own individual plug...I had to hook up 9 individual pins just for the front usb ports alone. Only downside to this particular case is a non-removeable motherboard try. Other than that, it's pretty good.

My case has a front firewire port too.....the connectors seem a bit odd....they are all individual but not in neat little square connectors like with the USB....alas I have not found a bord that will support a front firewire port.

All the firewire controller cards I have encountered (and USB 2.0 ones for that matter) when they have an internal port it is exactly the same as an external one....I can only guess it's to support Firewire/USB hubs that go in the 3.5/5.25" bays?
