If Anandtech forums dies.. where does the community prefer to move to?

I think it's a good idea to get this sorted ahead of time so end up saving the most of the community via triage

Been on Techpowerup forums for a while, but the vibe is quite different there.

Feels more hostile, less cohesive, and less casual banter/politics.

That said its still an old school forum and if enough of us move over then we'd stand a chance of changing the site character.

Alternative you have the techspot forums. I only suggest those because they're borderline dead, so we could effectively move in and just rebuild the community without too many pesky natives getting in the way.

Either way I recommend going and staking a claim with an account now even if you don't use it.

Lemmy as a temporary regrouping/information area, and Squirrel's place for a real forum.

Regardless of what one thinks of Squirrel's political/life views, he's non-corporate, and I think he's honest. I don't foresee bullshit with him at the helm. Everything else aside from technical competence is irrelevant to running a site.

What is the actual annual cost of running these forums?

If we had an actual number with the cost.. maybe 10-25 of us could band together as shareholders and do something with a stipulation to limit ownership to acceptance of our views.

I 100% foresee bullshit with a far right conspiracy-believer at the helm.
Try it, then move if you don't like it. I don't agree with most of the political views here but leaving OT because of that would suck and be short sighted. It's the OT community/format/style that I love. Humor, bad problems, good problems, shit I didn't know, banter, food/garden, and some plain ole bullshit. Kind of like Thanksgiving with the extended family.

I agree with lxs.

I definitely wouldn't go to reddit. During the api fiasco, I overwrote my comments and deleted my account. *I'll never go back.

*Full disclosure. I check a niche sub for news a couple times a week cause it isn't available anywhere else. I do that through the redreader app, and read only umm... only. If it required an account sometime in the future, I'd just have to do without.

Neffers would be better option than tfnn. Are there any good politics forums that allow spicy content?

Think we're gonna have to make our own forum from the looks of it.

I'm just waiting to find out the actual costs and maybe run it like linux mint.. on possible donations.

A typical dedicated server costs in the $100/mo range. OVH has pretty good pricing, that's where mine is at. Xenforo license is actually fairly reasonable too and is a one time payment. $195.

In theory one could scrape these forums and even transfer everything over to the new forum. I don't know what the legalities of that would be though... Technically Future probably owns the content of every post.

Really I think the best bet is whoever within the moderation/admin team that has direct contacts with Future just talks with them and ensures that there is in fact a long term plan, and if ever they do decide to shut it down, to at least give warning or even let someone else take the whole thing over.
