The biggest issue would be getting everyone their old usernames. I can guarantee if we go somewhere else that some nitwit will register as someone else's old user name and pretend to be that person.
Who wouldn't want to be me?

It feels more hostile? Have you been in P&N? J/K of course. It feels that way there because of their moderation style in the tech forums. Letting fanatics duke it out and derail discussions is bad juju. It's why I squash those beefs here faster than a jack rabbit on a hot date. May as well be on Reddit if you are going to allow shills, trolls, and fanatics to run wild and filthy the place up shit posting. As has been said, Reddit sucks, I am not making that my home.

I will still hang at TPU for tech as Wizz seems cool and he is far preferrable to corpo overlords. Tom's can suck it, I am not migrating there.

I don't know what Lemmy is so I am inclined to decline going there. But if it's the will of this council that the Hobbit carry the burden, I will see it done. I will need the link/ mark on his door in the Shire, and a fast tracked sign up process.

I think we have to be realistic.. What is the cost of running a forum vs what's the cost of owning the anandtech domain?

If we're able to maybe change the forum name/ domain to something cheaper like:

HomelessAnandtechBlackSheep.com

It would definitely be a lot cheaper to run the place and keep the same admins/ mods/ staff here that make this place fun. But change the staff/ mods a lot and the place can easily go from a fun place to hang out to a crappy place that no one wants to come to.. and I've seen a few forums go under.

And we need to do a cost basis of what we can afford as a community.. Can @Perknose or the others in the know post some info on roughly how much it costs for the forums alone?

I like posttech.com. I looked it up, and it's taken, but other tlds are available. It's post tech(like post rock), post anandtech, or you can post tech. Works on a bunch of levels.

I would say a discord server makes sense. There is already at least one unofficial discord server for the AT community.

The issue with using something like Discord is you're still at the mercy of a 3rd party, which could easily change/shutdown in the future. Ex: will Discord be around in 20 years from now?

We're trying to think of a cheap but practical way to save a mostly dead tech forum. Is this what you consider mission critical stuff? How are you in IT? Twitter run in a shed too? Good Lord.

As long as you have user emails, or at least access, getting a couple of hundred more or less active members shouldn't be an issue. But I have no idea how active the main forum is. This is pretty much the only place I go. Even clicking on the "social" header feels like too much work.

I honestly don't think we're getting anywhere near peak interaction on this forum.. maybe at most 2500 users a day of which about 200 really post a good amount.

Maybe 150 of those in P&N/ OT since it's the same old faces. And ofcourse we can ban the Russkie bots since Russia won't pay for it.

It doesn't seem like a huge undertaking.. an I'm still under the impression.. that the domain name anandtech.com will be the biggest expense.

Biggest hassle will probably be importing all usernames, our old posts and history but not that hard if we just migrate instead of start everything new.

See I don't know how to work discord, I find Reddit a bit impersonal and cold, I like the way forums are structured and I like that I know the posting styles of the members here so I know when someone's serious or lightheadedly trolling.
I really like the mid teams here, they keep a lid on people being arseholes but they are happy to let a conversation flow and don't get too stressed if things go way off topic!

My Ideal situation would be for the forum to stay as it is but maybe be owned by the members. I'd be happy to chip in to cover costs but I'd like the mod teams to stay the same, they are what gives the forum it's "flavour" (and peculiar scent if I'm honest)!

If I don't mark my territory how will others know it's mine? 🐺

We are discussing it in the tech forums too. I'll go where ever everyone else agrees to. I don't care if it's the Shire, or what. I don't see any way Future sells the the forums to us for a fair price, or let's us keep the name. A year of a shitty streaming service is over $100, so I am in for at least that much. I canceled Disney+ so the money would be better spent on keeping the band together.

Absolutely happy to chip in that much!
