The biggest issue would be getting everyone their old usernames. I can guarantee if we go somewhere else that some nitwit will register as someone else's old user name and pretend to be that person.
Someone just needs to hold an ip address and communicate it to all.
Also *maybe* the usernames could be reserved provided someone at this current forum made a mistake and saved them to a thumb drive or something.

I stopped going because 75% of the chat was Nik announcing he was taking another shit. I think it was Nik. Was a while ago.
Lol, sounds more like Klin to me.

Could maybe have a thread here used for verification, when you register at the new forum you get a code emailed to you, you need to come to the thread here to enter the code. The new forum will parse out that thread at certain intervals and verify that it is in fact the right username that posted the right code. Ex: it will not let you validate if the username here does not match. This could be a temporary process for a few months until the new forum is open to all.

If Future is willing to sell the forum as-is and then it's just the thing of moving it to another host then that would be the simplest option really assuming they don't ask a crazy price.

At this point we're also just speculating that they will in fact shut it down, as currently they said there's no plans, but it's still good to be prepared in case something changes in the... future. No pun intended.

It will eventually shut down, no way someone is going to keep paying for the ip renewal and or forum upkeep indefinitely.
Basically if someone had all that data an account could be created and assuming we all were smart enough to verify if our AT Forums email address is still accessible all would be good.
Another option would be some sort of group funding to basically buy these forums.

Yeah if they are willing to sell it that would be the best bet, that way we just get everything intact, database etc. Maybe even take over the server lease and keep it on the same server provider and all, assuming it's a leased server and not on prem at Future or a colo on hardware they own. Would just need to setup new backup jobs and other housekeeping stuff and probably change the name.

Create gpg keys as identity proof. It'll also act as a filter for people that can follow basic instructions :^D

as currently they said there's no plans
If I had a dollar for every time I heard that, I could buy... probably a Happy Meal, which isn't a ton of money, but it's still enough that I don't trust anything corporations say.

Oh yeah we definitely need a plan either way, but I do think there is also a chance it stays around. Question is, for how long... And will there be warning when they do close it down.

To be serious about this we definitely need to all agree on one place to go to, or on who runs it, if we make something new.

If someone can get ahold of someone at Future to determine things like if buying/obtaining the forum is even an option, that would be the best bet. Then just need to agree on someone to actually host it.

Everything's a fucking secret with companies. Shit that doesn't matter is classified as top secret. "Product x will stay on the market for the foreseeable future". One month later it's gone, and you're scrambling to work around it. Stupid shit. If we work together, we can get your old stock gone and closed out in an orderly manner, and plans can be made to adapt. Everyone wins!

Yeah it's dumb. They might just ignore any requests for any info. If that's the case then at least we tried. From there we need to decide on the next step. Probably easier to just start a new forum or pick an existing one that most agree to go to, and go from there.

We might want to create something similar to a transition group sooner rather than later. Their job would be first to liaise with Future to help eliminate any potential obstacles to the transition and get some idea of how close or far we are from needing a transition. I would suspect that as long as the site has net profitability for them that there's no need for any twisted panties.

But even if things look copasetic from the F-corp side, the group should keep an eye on the market for whatever the primary costs are likely to be - I would assume that's going to be the cost of dedicated servers, bandwidth, salaries (I suppose to the extent there are any of consequence), etc.

Network infrastructure has never been my bailiwick so forgive me if I've buried the lede here.
