I don't get it. Why use two devices when the phone you're tethered to can just do GPS by itself?

You can display the maps on the larger IPS screen of Nook Color, but use the phone's 3G data connection and GPS, which Nook doesn't have.

I guess it'd be fun to have when you're not on the go and just want to look at Google Maps satellite view, but when you're in the car and actually using GPS, how are you supposed to be able to use a 7" tablet? The idea is to let the voice guide you so you don't keep looking at the device. That being said, I hope I don't start seeing people with Nook's mounted to their dashboard or windshield lol.

I am not exactly sure either. But 7inch gps is better then 3.5inch yes¿ Other then that i actually have no idea. Although maybe there could be a stand alone wi-fi gps unit out there that could someday work with the nook and other wifi only tablets.

You can get a cheap low res phone like LG Optimus V, and still have a nice big screen GPS.

So if you go to the Youtube site with the browser the flash videos don't play?

The Youtube app (and all apps requiring hardware accelerated video support) doesn't work on CM7. But Flash on Android (till 10.2) is almost pure CPU. It should work on CM7 in the stock browser or in Dolphin Mini.
doh, i thought only HC didn't support youtube, but it's HC and CM7.

would it be difficult and time consuming to change my NC to dual boot CM7 and Froyo? i'd hate to tinker with the settings and apps, as i've already invested quite a bit of time in it already.

Someone finally offered me one for my offer price on craigslist and he sounds semi non-flaky.

I am going to try and use this 95% of the time as a media player. Should I even bother installing froyo on the thing, or just use a 4g sd card when i want to play with it as a tablet and use the stock B&N method to play media?

Suggestions on mem card speed needed for video? Can I get by with a class 4 or 6? I figure I will get multiple 8 or 16 gig cards and have one for me for the treadmill, and one for the kids movies in the car. Any other suggestions.

Poofy,
I downloaded the Froyo links you mentioned earlier in this thread. You rock!

Questions:
1.) After downloading some of the "usual suspect" apps, I'm left with about 700MB internal memory.

This device has 8GBs. How is it possible that some 20 odd apps with the OS can take so much of the internal memory?!

Any ideas?....

2.) I used Rock Player for Avi's but the video isn't totally smooth (usuable however). Any suggestions for improvements or other better playing players? (I have setcpu set to 1100 max setting fwiw)

No. Since I used the pre-maid dual boot roms its easy. Whatever OS you have stays, and whatever OS you add is dual boot.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959461

So just use the pre-built ROM to add Froyo.

The Nook has a separate media partition with the rest of the 8 gigs. I recommend just using a SD card for media though.

The absolute best performance is when you encode things for the Nook Color using Handbrake in x264. You also will not the same "not totally smooth" experience with Flash, and that is because both depend on the CPU.

I would just use the stock OS rooted.

The bigger the better for media.

Do I need clockwork recovery installed on my system? How do I know if it is installed?

I downloaded the AutoNooter 3.0.0 and put it on my SD card. Assumed it would just have me running from the SD card but apparently it flashed my nook because I can reboot without the card in....

I don't want the Nook OS on my system, I just want a version of Froyo (Gingerbread would be nice...) with a working market. YouTube would be nice but not essential.

Here's some basic questions I have (new to Android.)

I have Auto-nooted my system and played around with it, and I like it a bit. Now I really don't want to start over or re-flash my system, having to start-over with setting, apps, etc.
With that in mind:

  • When I search for an item in the Market, it come back and tells me that is found 3456 items that matched my search. Then it shows me 9 of them. How do I get to the rest? There appears to be no "next page," or "more" options.
  • Can I easily overclock it to 1.1Ghz with what I have, or does that require flashing it again?
  • I have AutoKeys and Zeam-launcher installed and working nicely together, but I still get the B&N bar (with home, back, options, etc) when I use some apps. Is there an easy way to get rid of this completely?
  • The only one good thing about the B&N bar is that is has a notification/task area. Is there a stand-alone option/app somewhere that will show me that Pandora is loaded, apps are downloading, media player is paused, updates are available, etc?

And while I'm at it, why on earth does the GOOGLE Android market search suck so bad?

I left an "s" off the app name and it came back with 1 completely unrelated app found.

No, the dual booting I am talking about only uses the card to install another version of the OS to the internal memory. You can then have no card in the system and still dual boot.

Here are the ROMs and the directions I used:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=959461

Hmm, there arent really instructions on that site. I downloaded the first link, prepare dual boot. Then the 4tf dual boot option where it overclocks to 1.1 and has HC. Not sure how to install it.

edit, just dropped the files in my nooks root, and now it is installing something upon bootup. Guess Ill see.

2x edit, and its still stock.

hmm, after more reading, I have version 1.1.0. And I would have to downgrade, then upgrade to 1.0.1 to root it. I dont want to do that. All I want to do is dual boot from a SD card. I know it will be slower, but whatever.

Hi,

Can someone help me?

I am dual booting custom froyo on my 1st partition and HC on the other. How could I update the kernel on each one, specifically the custom froyo.

I have tried extracting the updated kernel zip and replacing the older one in boot folder via NookColorUMS but it doesnt seem to work. The updated kernel is in the boot folder but when I reboot it is still showing the older one in the system status. I hope this makes sense to someone LOL.

The Market question is moot, once I realized I could install apps remotely from my PC. :awe:

I'm still curious about overclocking, however. The TigerSNES emulator tends to slow down occasionally. And video playback is iffy at times.

One week report. Been using this thing with Froyo and I love it. With reading, web browsing, music, videos, and all the regular stuff I do it's been a great. In fact, if the wifi weren't so flaky when it wakes up, this is even an issue sometimes with Softlocker, I'd say it's the perfect little tablet. I do wish the battery lasted longer when wifi is on, but that's not a huge deal either. I have a widget that I tap on my main screen that turns it on and off.

Anyway, I can't recommend this thing enough, it's a fantastic device.

my thoughts exactly, especially regarding the battery life. i'll just have to make sure i carry the charger around on overnight trips.

There is a new kernel that has fixed it completely for many people (without Softlocker-type hacks):

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12005362&postcount=781

I haven't tried it yet, because all my time recently has been in CM7 (thanks to working Bluetooth).

I do wish the battery lasted longer when wifi is on, but that's not a huge deal either. I have a widget that I tap on my main screen that turns it on and off.

The newer kernels do a better job of scaling the CPU speeds up and down on demand. The real issue is that unlike with the stock build our systems can't really sleep. I hope this gets fixed with the CM7 builds.
