Because that is all they had, no choice. Just about everyone did. They just had to live in mansions. And only a very few lived in huts. It would be the ones in huts who would be admired and looked up to. There would be entire theories and movements on how we can get more people to live in huts.
If every person was real thin and skinny, it would be overweight and obese ones who would be considered privileged. As you may know that has been the case in many societies historically, and I believe still is in some.
If every woman walked around bare breasted, the female breast and the accompanying cleavage wouldn't be the object of a million industries worth trillions of dollars. There are still places, considered "not civilized" by the conceited modern man where women don't cover breasts and no one thinks twice about it. Incidentally, it was the self proclaimed civilized man that killed more than 100 million people in the last century alone, and not those supposed brutes.
Comparisons is what we do. Someone more intelligent, more wise, more famous, more funny, more social, has more looks, more educated, has more friends, has more possessions, has more social status, has more car, more gadgets, more money, more this more that. That is what we do, both consciously and unconsciously....until such time when there is nothing to compare.
I can talk about it, think about it, read about it, write on a forum about it, text about it....but......can I not compare? Is there a way out of this prison?
