If it rises in the atmosphere it collects at the top near the north pole then?
If you put a hot air balloon in space, can it float "up"?
Which way is "up", is there an Arrow somewhere?

Up and down on earth are definitions we created because of gravity.

Ok, i'm going back over and watch them argue over the 680.

LMAO , welcome to Off Topic where reality doesn't exist.
You'll get used to it.

Consider it "entertainment" with no educational value whatsoever.

My 16 year old brother couldn't answer this... so I had him play a little game.

Point UP.
Where does hot air go?
OK

Now point North.
Is where hot air goes?

"So North is a two dimensional direction for 'up' on a map but the sky is the 3 dimensional direction for 'up'?"

My goodness!
Don't play coy.

I feel bad for the people who live down south.
They are forced to go their entire lives living upside-down.
Simply because they weren't "lucky enough" to be born at the "top" of the earth.

If you took a giant round ball and put it on the north pole, it would not roll down.

Of course not, that's up-hill, the earth is round!

Now if you took that same ball and put it just south of the equator: that baby's going DOWN!

Lucky us! we get to have winter when the earth is closest to the sun.

But I think that does make us the one's that are upside-down...

Power, (heat), falls off with the cosine of the angle to the sun. At the north and south poles the angle is very oblique which means little heating, especially compared to the equator which is facing the sun head-on.

This is what drives the weather patterns.

Doesn't explain why the South Pole is cold too.

Checkmate.

So, I guess we have to say heat likes a fine balance then, eh? If you inject it low, it rises until it can no longer rise. If you inject it high, it sinks until it can do so no longer. It has a middle-point equilibrium then.

The problem is that the Coriolis effect bends the hot air headed for the North pole causing the trade winds where heat is traded for rain. The result of that is that rain falling at the pole, because the heat has been lost, freezes and becomes snow. The snow makes the pole cold. Fortunately, however, because the North pole pulls on the South pole and visa versa, the Earth has become an oblate spheroid, or some such which means that the cold air from the pole slides down the curvature of the Earth, but not too fast because of the flattened arch. This helps to keep the pole cold by preventing all the cold air from running out very fast. One day, as the poles keep pulling on each other and flattening the Earth, it will in fact be as flat as a pancake and therefore also huge. There will be room for trillions of people and you will be able to travel to the other side of the world by digging a hole.

From now on, I'm telling students that the Earth bulges at the equator as a result of the poles being attracted to one another and squeezing the Earth.

and this is why I could never be a teacher. I would intentionally corrupt the minds of every student.

This is why I want to be a professor

my roommate is a professor

He messes with his students a lot. When he gets his freshies, him and his buddy swap classrooms for the first hour. No reason other than to mess with them.

One of his classes thought he was gay, so he dressed up and played the part for a day. I really wish I could have been there for that.

Then he was teaching about memory and in the middle of the lecture, his buddy came in and mugged him and he grilled the class on what they remembered afterwards.
