How high can I safely overclock ? And if I get it to XP 2100, does that mean that if I have a HS/Fan that's recommended by AMD for a 2100 will it be enough for my 1600 overclocked ro 2100 ? Thanks, if you can't realize, I never overclocked before and don't really know the precautions and all. If you have any warnings/opinions/ideas please let me know.

Thanks a lot

Im not a pro at this stuff but I did unlock my xp1600 and I currently have it running at XP2000 levels. Every chip is different so overclocks can vary but it does seem that certain ones do better than others and that has alot to do with the steppings. If you have a heatsink/fan that is recommended for up to an XP2100,it very well may be enuff for the task. You can always try it and if you see your temps are going to high, you can just purchase a better one.

If you just plan on overclocking your chip by using the FSB(front side bus),keep in mind that you should have quality memory and of course a motherboard that allows you to adjust the FSB. You can unlock the chip as well and overclock it using the multiplier in addition to the FSB but thats a whole separate procedure.

Bottom line is abitaz, search this site and other overclocking sites and look for how to guides and keep reading these and other message boards until your comfortable enough to do it. It really isn't that hard and yes there are a few risks but they are minimal if your careful. Most times, if you push your overclock to much, your machine just freezes up and you can just restart your pc or you have to reset your motherboards cmos. Heat is one of the main factors in overclocking and so keeping an eye on your cpu's temps is important so you have to look around and see what other people's temps are to know if your within safe levels.

Like I said, just keep on snooping around these and other message boards and you'll learn quick.

Good Luck.

Edit:I'll also add that overclocking using you FSB may stress out some of your components and "could" even cause failure but I have yet to see anyone ever post that they have permanently damaged a component but theres always that risk.

Basically there is not really a set limit for how high you can overclock your chip. The best way to find out how high your 1600+ will go is to overclock in small intervals. Increasing the fsb by 1mz each time is good if your board supports this. After each increase check the stability by running different benchmarks. Or you can run any task that keeps the cpu at 100% usage for a few hours. If it seems to be stable increase your fsb some more. Play it safe and go slow and you shouldn't run into any problems.

I have the same proc, check out my system below. I run it with a 155 fsb (1627Mhz). Just like Buddy said, use small increments. And make sure you know where the Bios Reset jumpers are on your motherboard because you will probably need to use them when the fsb is too high to even POST.

I couldn't even get my XP1700 to run at 1800 speeds without lockups. Probably my $35 DDR RAM from Best Buy huh? I think one's a PNY, and the other is a Kingston Value RAM. 256 each, both PC2100

I just got the XP 1600 and a K7S5A from newegg. The mobo only offers these frequencies: 133, 138, 150, 166. I'm thinking that 150 will be out of spec on the AGP and PCI. Should I risk that, or should I use a defogger on the chip and give it a 12.5X mult instead of it's 10.5?

Well I run mine at 142 x 12 but I think I may just back it off to 133 x12. I'll feel more comfortable running my components at spec and it's really not that much of a speed difference. Ultimately though, the better overclocks performance wise are achieved by having the FSB as high as you can go and be stable. Now if I had that 1/5 divider on my board,I would shoot for 166 but I don't so I went for the unlocking method and so I just use the multipier. As far as risks go,its like I stated above...I've never heard anyone actual say they ruined there components but some people do get data corruption when they push it to far.

Edit:I have no 12.5 setting so I tried 13 and 14 for the hell of it and it wouldn't boot and I had to reset cmos.

That board does not have multipier adjustment.

Yes, but you can go to the
OC Workbench ECS Forum and download and install one of the CheepO BIOS files to enable some better overclocking abilities with the FSB. These BIOS files are pretty well tested by the group there and in reality are not what you would commonly refer to as "hacked". They just use some sort of function to "reveal" the options that are hidden in the BIOS by ECS. Anyway, just an option. I used the ChepO Bios429 to overclock my nephews 950 Duron to 1.2 GHz on the K7S5A. Not bad for a "non-overclocking" MB.

How high can I safely overclock ?

Didn't bother to unlock mine, and popped in my rig yesterday, runs a little unstable after looping 3Dmark2001SE @ 176 X 10.5 1850MHz without jacking my vcore up to 1.85, so I backed it down to 172 x 10.5 1804MHz 1.78 vcore. 35/40 C at idle (system/CPU), 48 C CPU after full load for a couple hours. 400MHz overclock without unlocking...not too shabby! My Ram runs stable @ cas 2 to 190 (380 DDR) cas 2.5 to 204, so I could probably do better by lowering the multiplier and jacking the FSB, but I'll keep her here for now.
