Yeah, notfred, you're probably right, but as nerds, we like to keep things complex. It's the opposite of KISS. I call it KICK - Keep it complex and kooky.

rgwalt, not to offend you, but how much is a new door, one that the odds are, will never become an issue, compared to $20-30 every month? The last thing Mike needs is another monthly bill. Plus, they already have his money in the form of a damage deposit. And like I said, they don't like to screw good tenants. If it becomes an issue, he could probably negotiate something.
I don't want to assume anything, but they might have had something against your GF (habitually paid rent late, noise or security complaints against her, throwing parties, PIA, whatever), or else the light bulb issue is simply a pet peeve of the manager, as it could become after years and years of replacing a half dozen burned out bulbs whenever a tenant leaves.
No offense taken. She was a model tennant though. She paid her rent on time, never threw parties, never had a problem with the management. Besides, this complex was huge. The lightbulb thing was a part of the requirements when she moved out. All the lightbulbs were supposed to be in working order when she left. They were all in working order when we left the place, but I suppose one could have burned out when they went to look over the apartment or whatever. The point is that a new lightbulb doesn't cost $5, it costs no more than $1, and the "labor" to put it in certainly doesn't make up the differnce. Now, if the complex was to make an extra $5 per apartment when people moved out, it could add up to be a decent sum of money.
I guess what I am trying to get across is that it has been my experience (and the experience of those I know) that an apartment complex will screw people over when they leave to continue getting cash from them. The management will do almost anything to not have to give the security deposit back. I just wanted to give Michael an alternative that would not only help him avoid getting screwed by his apartment, but would let him move some of the stuff out of his place. Just an idea.
Putting the door under the bed is another good one.
A computer in your bedroom is too loud, but a 36" fan isn't???2. If unacceptable, will buy new door and mount 36-inch box fan in hole in door, while old door hides under the bed.
