If I use a CC is a store legally allowed to ask for picture ID?

I was in Target (TARGET Owns J00!). Anyway one time I didn't have ID and the lady refused to allow me to use my visa without it. Finally a store manager came along and said that as long as she sees me sign it they don't need ID. I was allowed through. A week later same person asked for ID. I had it and gave it.

Not long ago I was asked for it again. I know why they do it and I SHOULDN'T feel belittled but I do. I go in buying $20 worth of stuff, sign the visa, and they want me to prove I own the card. It just bugs me. Anyway most importantly can I deny them to do this and yet still have all rights to buy the product? I am posting this while reading the Bestbuy thread.

i always had the belief that it should be required to purchase with picture ID when using a credit card
in ternet buying is different, but at least most check if the address you specify is valid for your credit card.

Of course its allowed. They're taking a risk when they accept a credit card that the card being used isn't stolen. Sure they're covered for most of the losses, butthey are liable for some of it.

They also have hte right to refuse service to anyone so they can refuse you service if you don't show it to them.

OK...but I wonder why the manager that time waived me through anyhow?

It's not really for my protection since 90+% of stores don't bother with this. If somebody wanted to use my CC they just wouldn't go to target.

Sure they have that right if its in their policy.
Most stores have that policy, but few flex it.

I wrote "ASK FOR ID" on the signature part of my card.

I would prefer if they carded everyone for credit card purchases. I hate those visa check card commercials. I'm sorry, but I'd feel a lot better if I lost the card directly tied to my checking account if every person required you to check their id.

Hell, half the people don't even look at the back.

I think they SHOULD ask for ID. I prefer when they do. I hate it when they just accept that I am who I say I am, and don't even bother to check my signature either. If I can do it so easily, then some f'er who stole my wallet or found my card could do it too. It sure makes it easy for people to commit fraud when no one bothers to ask for ID or check signatures.

Damn that ain't a bad idea! I'm thinking of doing that. I wonder if there are any problems with having more than a signature on back of card...? Yeah I used my visa check card online a couple times ("had to"), but I don't feel good about it. I much prefer a normal card for that, but then I never have much in checking anyway unless it was just payday.

You're not making any sense. How is it not for your own protection that they check for a picture ID? Your explanation is 90+% of stores don't check? I purposely don't sign the back of the my CC so they will ask me for picture ID. From what you are saying, you do realize that if you lost your CC someone could've walked into a store and buy stuff with your CC and get away with it 90+% of the time?

I have never had any problems. 99% of the time merchants ask for ID and match it to the front of the card.

So, did you walk to target, or were you driving around w/o your license?

No kidding. Want to hear something really amusing? My dad got a new Discover card (one of the American Flag ones), and he had forgotten to sign the back. We were at wal mart, he hands the cashier the card to pay, she checks the back, sees it isn't signed, hands it back to him and says "Sir, we can't accept this if it isn't signed." He signs the back, gives it back to her, and she rings it up and allows us to leave. I was a little more then surprised.

<< I wonder if there are any problems with having more than a signature on back of card...? >>

I just write "Please See ID" on mine, I don't sign them. Then, to verify it's me (which is all the signature strip is for anyway, they're supposed to compare the signature on the card to your reciept) I just show them my drivers license. I may or may not have my signature on that, I can't remember

i WANT them to check for ID when i use my cc..that's why i write in back of all of them "ASK FOR ID" because how will they know it is me otherwise? BUT 90% of them never ask which pisses me off..they're so dumb..

I used to do that too, until some stupid cashier at a bookstore in an airport in Cancun said she wouldn't take my card unless it was signed. So I signed it on the spot and she took it. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

EDIT: hehe...looks like the same thing happened to MrBond's dad.

I think that's what I'm saying. BTW you realize that if somebody stole your CC they'd simply put their own signature on it right?

I walked. I didn't have a car then

Apparently you never read the credit card agreement, let me fill you in a little detail you are missing. Under Federal Law you are limited to $50 liability for a stolen credit card IF you sign the back of the card. If you fail to sign the card you are responsible for any and all fradulent charges on a stolen card. The signature is there as a verification, without it a theif can steal the card and sign it. 99% of theifs couldn't forge your signature in a believable way signing on the spot like that, it takes talent to do something like that and petty theifs rarely have that talent.

The only problem I've run into with writing "See ID" in place of my signature is at the post office. I went to use my check card and they said they couldn't accept it unless it was signed. Pretty stupid if you ask me, but it's their policy, not much I can do about it.

the last time i worked in retail we had a store police where if the card was signed on the back and we could tell the signature on the receipt we matching or similar than we weren't supposed to ask for an ID. If the card is not signed, or has the words "See ID" on it, then we are supposed to ask for ID.

Here's the story. A credit card is not legal tender, so stores do not have to accept them. Showing them your id can be part of their agreement with you to accept your card as legal tender.

On a similar note, a store must accept legal tender for transactions. I believe the only exception is if they state beforehand that they are not equiped to handle certain forms of currency (ie, does not accept $100 bills).

Oh don't be silly. A store can demand/deny any form of payment they so desire. I know plenty of places that won't take any cash.

As I said, unless they state beforehand.

Read your dollar bill.

"THIS NOTE IS LEGAL TENDER FOR ALL DEBTS, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE"

Show me a law or decision that says otherwise.

Edit: Just wanted to say the capitalization is not for yelling, just typed directly from the bill.
