Assuming i update my PC in the near future, and i want a BIG widescreen monitor for gaming...but hate LCDs...what should i do ?

Btw. with "big" i mean it should still fit on a desk...also suitable for work/programming etc.

Get a widescreen (21+ 24+ CRT ???) ???

Are there any really fast LCDs out yet which are actually suitable for gaming/FPS ??

Wait for new tech coming up ?

If speed is your only issue... might as well drop the cash for a LCD now.

if you do tons of text intensive jobs or programming, you might find an LCD easier to work with for long periods of time.

What is it that you hate about LCDs? Have you ever actually tried gaming on one? If you're still disappointed, perhaps OLED is the answer. It shouldn't be that long until we see some OLEDs. Maybe two years, I don't really know. SED computer monitors probably won't be showing up for another five years.

bingo. one of the biggest/best CRT's a home user could get... 24" (22.5" viewable), widescreen, can match all but the most high end LCD's in colors, contrast, dot pitch and even text and absolutely destroys any LCD because it can change resolutions w/o blurriness, no lag, no dead pixels, no viewing angle issues, no motion blur, deep blacks, no backlight bleeding, etc... it's a huge and heavy beast (92lbs!) but IMO, well worth it until we can get an LCD technology that can match it.

i bought mine a couple months ago on ebay for <$300. i highly recommend, if possible, buying it from somewhere local so you can pick it up. that'll save you the absurd shipping costs ($100+) and more importantly, you can ask to inspect the screen before you take it home. the one they were originally gonna give me had scratches, so i had them pull out 4 others until i picked one up that was perfect.

I've been a huge CRT advocate...until about two weeks ago. I picked up the 22" WS Acer Circuit City had on sale, with coupon, for $259. I can't believe how good it looks. So much sharper than my 21" Sony CRT, 15% more screen, gaming looks fantastic. I wish I would have switched a long time ago.

OP, Also seriously consider nitromullets comments ..he makes a lot of good points which LCD users tend to ignore / overlook / (denial?) , LCDs may have a bright and sharp image but theres *many* negatives associated with it. I wouldnt trade my FW900 for any current LCD.

But If you decide to try LCD just be sure you're able to return it in case you dont like it.

Well, I went LCD just a few months ago, and I personally don't mind any "negatives" in LCD (The only gripe I have is the notably less dark blacks, and even that can be ignored IMO). Of course, I suppose others are probably more sensitive to the other negatives than myself (Ghosting, the aforementioned less deep blacks, etc), so I guess it's up to you... Like the others said, if you go LCD, make sure you can return it if it's visual quality doesn't meet your standards.

If you are in the Michigan area, check eBay as there are some of those Sony's going for $199, used... If any good, that'd be a steal...
