what residential areas are near: (i'm looking for different places, not one location that is close to all five.)

1. young people, fun nightlife.
2. business/financial district
3. near/on the water
4. shopping area
5. parks/recreation

i want to stay as far away from suburbia as possible.

thanks!

There's nightlife in Hunter's Point, but you may not survive it.

The Haight will probably fit the requirements listed. Lots of flats to rent, Nightlife galore on the actual Haight St.

It's "near" the water, in that it's a short bike ride away.

There's shopping all over that area.

Close to Golden Gate Park.

Uhhh... you don't want to live or hang in Hunter's Point, it's ghetto with all the trappings of a ghettos

How much can you afford? Do you have a car? Parking would be a huge problem if you live in the hip area.

I'd say $1400 to $1800 can get you a pretty decent 1 bedroom, $1900 - $2100 can get you a pretty decent 2 bedroom. Parking may be extra $150 a month (you won't find street parking in most places).

Marina and Richmond are good area for apartment that's affordable. Sunset is mostly single family house and has a suburb feel. Castro, Haight, and Russian Hill are probably good too.

Just stay away from Silver, and Mission, etc for safety reason.

i do have a car, but i wouldn't mind getting rid of it if there's sufficient public transportation.

i'd be looking for a 2 or 3 bedroom place, $2100 would not be a problem for 2 bedrooms although cheaper would be better.

i'll browse craiglist for some of the areas you listed. thanks!

1. young people, fun nightlife.

Depends what kind of person you are but
North Beach, Marina, Mission (inner) have the most night life

2. business/financial district
North Beach or South Beach / SOMA. If you don't mind public transit to get there Cole Valley / Haight gets you right there on the 'N' or places like Laurel Heights get you there pretty quickly on express busses.

3. near/on the water
Look at a map. Nowhere is more than 3.5 miles from water.

4. shopping area
What kind of shopping - all the neighborhoods have shops. All the dept stores etc. are near Union Square.

5. parks/recreation
GG Park would mean Sunset or Richmond (or Haight / Cole Valley / Panhandle for the end of the park) - but there are parks dotted all around the city.

great information, i just needed to clarify two things.

1. when i meant on/near the water, i really was looking for places with a boat slip or at most, 1 or two blocks from the water.

2. by shopping, i didn't mean shopping malls or department stores. i was looking more for an outdoor walking area that's dog friendly with boutique shops and cafes. have you ever been to miami? something like lincoln road on south beach. read a little about lincoln road here.

thanks!

If cost isnt an issue, you really can't go wrong with living in the marina. It really does satisfy all your requirements. Look into it.
Finding an apt that allows pets will be more difficult and possibly more costly though.
