i've done the cross-country trip (San Diego to Virginia) twice now, towing stuff each time. first time was for my brother. second time was for me.

i was lucky to have parents able (with appropriate tow vehicle - ford excursion) and willing (to drive) to help.

You may also want to consider shipping the car and flying out. I got quotes in the $800-1200 range to ship my SUV from AZ to NJ.

I was gunshy about obtainign uhaul type services before...but after using it recently I'm honestly quite surprised how easy and effortless it was. There are very few hidden fees...I found it just as easy as using a rental car at an airport.

Keep the floor jack in your car. It useless anywhere else. That's a non-issue. Sell the furniture, & ship the stuff you really want with ground freight.

I'd fast forward 2 years into the future and just avoid the entire moving thing altogether.

If you're looking to relocate why not move to D.C./MD/VA Which seems to be close to where you are now. There are TONS of IT jobs in this area. I would imagine you've got some additional experience at this point.

I think the cost to ship a 60 pound floor jack is going to exceed the possible loss you would take by selling yours on Craigslist, then buying another one on Craigslist in the new city.

The risk to your transmission is very low, assuming you're towing within your vehicle's limits.

this. sell all heavy things. Consider that a mover will charge you ~$1/lb if you ship them on a truck. Add to that the cost of whatever you get selling it local, then subtract cost of buying this after you move--if it is absolutely needed.

The only thing OP should be keeping are his computer parts--depending on age, could be quite a bit cheaper to ship. I would just pack that stuff in my car and drive it, though.

get rid of all furniture. seriously, you don't need it.

Most DC IT jobs (including menial ones) require "security clearance", which is impossible to get without a sponsor of some sort, like an employer. Another reason I want to leave the DC / Baltimore metro is the traffic congestion, that the politicians have no real interest solving, apart from adding more toll fees.

Dallas/Houston (unfortunately may need Spanish language) and Seattle (unfortunately cloudy & rainy) are highly interesting to me.

You can also consider riding in the car with Trident, he's going on a tour of the entire USA looking for the best job. You guys can split on gas.

Minimize your stuff then drive yourself and the rest of the important things. Way more of a hassle and $$ to get stuff like a desk and chair over to a different location.

Sorry for bring up this thread, but I'd like other learn my lesson.

Unless you have something to offer like years of experience, or (maybe, and [both], instead of 'or') a 4 year STEM accredited college degree, and are willing to do the job for the same pay or less, as the local candidates of the job location, applying for distant job is a waste of time.

If you're willing to go there and take out a lease on an apartment, or even a P.O. box, without securing a job, at the remote location, then that's a different story.

The company risks going into bad terms with the local government if they hire a non-local candidate.

Due to a lack of job opportunities in my metropolitan area, given my academic credentials (an IT associates agree with notable IT certifications for entry level individuals). I'm willing to relocate across the United States to obtain a livable wage job (12+/hour with benefits full time bare minimum).
The jobs around here (even the 14 dollar an hour ones) require 3-5 years work experience, and I'm not interested in doing unpaid/unlivable wage internships. A great percentage of the jobs are in the D.C. metro area, which will require me driving 2.5+ hours a day, after taking into account potential traffic jams.

If I wanted to move my furniture such as an office chair (without dismantling it), computer case and office desk, and even a mattress; what would be the most logical way to do so?
The places I'm looking at, are at least 1,000 miles away.
And of course I'm willing to drive my car cross country, after changing the timing belt/tensioner/oil/tires, lol.

I'm hoping to relocate within the next 2 years if all goes according to plan. My metropolitan areas have some of the worst traffic jams in the nation.

Use some sort of a vehicle to move your stuff!!
