if intel begins making cpu's stronger then amd, but costs a tad bit more like it does now over current amd cpu's, would you still buy the intel cpu's even thought price for performance is proportionally the same as amd? i wanna see if its still based on price/performance, or maybe since we've been using amd for while, we've just been biased towards it.

If both Intel and AMD offered the same price/performance (and similar performance, presumably), I'm not sure what I would use. It would probably come down to which one did the best at gaming, and then to the chipsets/motherboards...

Clarify the question please.

Are you asking if we would buy Intel over AMD if the Intels were faster/better & just a little more expensive?

I would buy an Intel if it was better than AMD for the same price, but since i didn't quite follow your poll, i said "not sure".

I'd stick w/ AMD, just because I think competition is good for the market, but if intel was giving WAY better bang/buck, then I'd probably bite.

I like intel chipsets a little more than nvidia and a lot more than via, so I'd probably buy intel even with somewhat worse price/performance.

But I have no budget constraints, I could buy P4EE if I felt like pouring money down the drain. For anyone who does have a fixed budget (most threads in GH) I'll always recommend AMD for the better price/performance.

I don't care who makes them,as long as it's cheap & fast I will buy it.

I'm a hardware whore with no loyalty whatsoever.

If AMD makes CPUs with higher Ghz rating, and Intel's chipsets can be equated to crap, would you buy AMD?

What kind of qusetion is this?

priceerformance is both relative and dependant on needs/wants.

I beleive the purchase descision, assuming everything else constant (which its certainly not, nevermind the "fanboy" distortions), would be to buy either the cheapest chip having a given minimum performance; or the highest performance chip for less than a given maximum price. Rational ecomic man should also count the motherboard (and any other related costs) in the consideration. Of course IRL when priceerformance is not linear for chips, purchase decision is a mix of the two - but still usually one is given a lot more weight than the other.

A proc costing 25% more that actually gives 25% more performance would probably be a nothing less than a STEAL at the price.

I'd buy whatever performs and works the best, for a reasonable price.. which is why AMD has been the leader for so many years.

If this switched (which i doubt) then I would go to Intel most likely, cept I am tired of having problems with P4 boards, so that would have to change as well.

Price : Performance is where it is all at for me. For a "budget" rig the 2.4c I got and OC'd to 3.3 on stock air can't be beat for the price.

I would still like AMD better. I've always been a sucker for the underdogs. I remember going with a RIVA TNT ove a Voodoo 2 at the time.

celerons rock! and so do high prices!

Yes you can...you feed it too much salt beforehand

Fine, feed the man some salt and see if he buys an AMD processor.

I'm not sure what to say to that one.

The way i see it, the salt is Intel's "great" advertising...hence why people will buy Intels even when they can get a better AMD for less in many cases.

And that will be the end of my threadjacking, sorry

i dont intend to flame you, but your question is a bit too vague one to give a clear answer to. exactly how much of performance increase would it be? and for how much more could it be had? i kinda see where u getting at, but its hard to draw the line to see if they have similar bang for buck with one being at higher price; if that somehow managed to happen, then it would really be a tough call.
even then, the question is hypothetical at best, i dont see that happening anytime soon... hell, apple might start making some awesome macs to replace pcs you know

I think in a lot of people's minds intel reigns supreme and it will always stay that way. If you pick up any average joe on the street and ask them who makes cpus, they'll probably say intel because its the only company that they will know. Intel may not be the definitive choice for computer enthuisats or systembuilders but it reigns supreme in the big company oem market (dell, ibm).
