Indeed. If Valve limits their own games to Steam, Steam fanboys have no right to criticize EA for keeping their games off of Steam.

Steam IS the developer for HL, HL2, Portal series. It's their own games.
Since when did EA develop the ME or CoD series?

I want the game and don't give a crap about Origin. I do prefer it coming without such requirement though. This goes for any game out there, with either Steam, Origin, Battlenet or other crap. I do miss the old fashioned "buy dvd-> play-> gtfo "

I don't buy BMWs because they only sell them at BMW dealerships. Uncompetitive bastards...

I tried Origin once during the BF3 beta, and hated it. (I hate Steam too)

I really hope they don't shackle the game with pos software when you buy it retail. It doesn't make sense.

Just had an interesting thought, pretty sure I'm seeing the first examples of gamer stick-in-the-muds in my generation. Steam/online distribution haters. With decent broadband starting a game in steam is essentially the same as starting it in any other setting (double click on icon -> play game), with smoother DRM and sweet deals on games.

It's the future guys, and unless you've got some clout with the gaming industry to make things otherwise, might as well adapt.

Put it this way. EA is trying to do the same thing as Barnes and Nobles did when the ebook market started rolling. Amazon had a monopoly of the ebook market just like Steam had a monopoly on video game digital distribution. Both EA and B&N wanted a slice of the action. It's disappointing that consumers then react so vehemently towards newcomers when they can easily say no with their wallets.

The issue is that Amazon and B&N are just distributors. From what I saw there was more scoffing at the idea of an eBook than any legit outrage over either, as the content was still available either way. When it comes to video games, the game in question is often available from one and only one distributor, at least for a considerable period of time. As others have pointed out, even if you buy in a B&M store you have to register it with steam/origin.

If I can buy it on Steam, I won't care if it requires Origin or not. I only care about being able to buy on Steam.

If it won't be available on Steam, I don't know what I will do...

I don't care to be honest, infact pre-ordered ME3 already,as a gamer I've dealt with many software companies and DRM etc...nothing phases me in my old age now except pricing on some CE games.

I don't think it's a question of "if", I'm quite confident that it will require it. It's an EA published game and they want to push Origin. I think most, if not all, EA games from this point forward will require it.

None of the choices really fit my feelings. The worst case in my opinion is if a game requires two platform, such as GFWL and Steam. But since Steam and EA dont seem to get along this is not likely.

My main reservation with ME 3 is that the quality of Bioware games seems to be going down badly lately. Originally, ME3 would have been a day one purchase for me on either Steam or Origin. But now, I probably will wait for game reviews, just to see if the quality of the game is up to the other two. I only play single player, so I am also concerned that they are adding multiplayer, in that I dont know how this will affect the single player experience. If they turn it into COD in space with a lame 5 hour single player campaign and the focus on multiplayer, then I will not purchase it until the price drops.

I will not buy it unless it is on steam. I will not condone EAs anti competitive practices give me a whole competitive product to steam and I will use your service. Same reason I do not have Battlefield 3.

How is introducing a competitor to Steam "anti-competitive"? I have not used Origin, and it may be a terrible platform, but I would consider it introducing more competition to steam than eliminating competition. The problem that I see is that I dont want a separate client from each game publisher to have to be installed.

The ideal to me is to have no client to have to be installed if you buy the game on DVD, with the option to register on steam if you so desire. But I guess those days are past.

Buy a DVD, buy it from whatever platform is available, and play anyway, maybe???

Did you not play any games on PC before Steam?

Personally love steam. Originally it was pretty disastrous and hated when WON shutdown forced complete switch into steam, but after a while it really grew on me. I think part of the knee-jerk reaction is due to a new platform that is still being ironed out.

I do think the other part of the problem is the fracturing of the game distribution. Steam works well because it's so easy to access content from so many different developers. I like the fact independent devs can get content on steam like the "big boys". I love Sanctum (Tower Defense but also FPS FTW) playing co-op with my friends. If big publishers force people to choose their game and require only their platform to use it, distribution fracturing will likely cause more problems with consumers because each company will need their own programs setup and running.

In an ideal world, we would chose our platform we wish to use, and whatever games we want to buy. I think we're going to be forced away from that idea.

We'll be forced away for now as Steam is very much the big fish in the pond, but as other companies get their own digital distribution systems in line we'll see more choice in the market. Just look at the iPhone. Originally exclusive to AT&T, a few years later everyone but T-Mobile, and that's largely due to them being in commercial limbo due to the potential sale. Or the video game market. There's a reason games distributed by MS are available on platforms besides the 360. There comes a certain point where even companies as stupid as EA will realize that, once their distribution system is established, they get more profit from putting their product on multiple platforms.

I get that people are in a tizzy about Origin, EA's not the greatest company in the world, but I think they're probably just the first in a line of publishers that have or or are working on a similar system of digital distribution in an effort to conserve the cut Valve takes off the top when a game sells on Steam, which from what I've heard, it's a pretty deep cut.

I bought Battlefield 3 and had to use Origin for it, and haven't really had any complaints. I'll still pick up Mass Effect 3, because it'll probably be an awesome game, Origin or not.

So when every publisher has their own "Steam", that means I'll need 5-6 different applications, each with a separate buddy list and other features, just to play games? No thanks. I can handle one, maybe two such applications on my machine, but more than that and it's only going to get cluttered and fragmented (especially features like friends lists).

Plus I actually like Valve, but I do not like EA one bit. If that means I don't get to play ME3 (which I'm already wary of after seeing DA2 and ME2), then that's no problem.

After my experience with Origin with BF3 I will never purchase another game that uses Origin --- already uninstalled and deleted BF3.

Stopped buying games from Ubi for their draconian DRM, looks like EA may be next.

I don't buy games on DVD anymore (last time I did that was for my Xbox a few years ago). Ok, I bought StarCraft2 CE (was a total waste of $$$ for me btw). It doesn't matter what I was doing before Steam, for the past 4 years I was buying games for PC through Steam only. Why? 3 clicks, a relatively short download and I can play it. I have a nice tool to move selected Steam games to my SSD (2 more clicks and a short wait). I have a nice overlay and can talk to friends while playing. I have achievements. Everything just works.

Is that answer enough for you?

I have had no problems with Origin while playing BF3, and while I don't think the service is as polished as Steam it's also new, and will take some time to grow. Steam is required to run Valve games, and many other games are Steamworks as well. Yet somehow it is just horrible in the minds of gamers that EA requires a client to be run as well, just like Valve has for years.

I understand that some people don't like EA as a company, myself included, but what they are doing with Origin should not be a surprise. I don't really care if Origin is required, as long as it's not the only way to buy the game. I loved ME1 & 2 and ME3 will be a pre-order for me whether it requires Origin or not.

Well you didnt really answer the question. The point I was trying to make was that Steam is convenient for some users, and can cause issues for others if you have a bad internet or just have connection problems for some other reason. And believe me it does happen because I have decent internet and a decent computer, and I could not connect with steam for days when their new authentication process took effect.

I cant understand why someone would refuse to play a game that they wanted to play just because it is not on Steam. My point was that before Steam we managed to play and enjoy PC games, so I dont understand why we still cant.

Probably not if it was only available on Origin; I honestly have little desire to buy any games that are not on Steam. Of course I will not be buying it anyway because I did not like ME2.

Origin required? Fvck that. I'll sooner slice out my left testicle.

NO, I'll definitely resist that, but I'll also resist buying virtually any origin game as it and EA are the only co's I've had any serious problems with.
Yet to have any problems on Steam+ the great steam sales.
