I was just wondering if money were no object and you could get what you wanted what would you get? Specifically if you were building a gaming computer what would you put in it?

I'd build a $1200-1500 computer (AGP, for that matter). It's far wiser to save money for upgrades down the road, because you will lose money faster on top-of-the-line components than on a new American car.

If money is no object....

A dual Xeon 604 server, complete with Quadro FX 4000 SDI 256MB videocard, RAID*3* 15k SCSI drives and 16gigs (or more) of memory. That's enough power to render a short 3D animation.

And get a current copy of Maya AND 3DMax (for CGI and games).

Then if there's money left, build a 40" Schmidt telescope with spectrograph abilities.

...I wish!!...

That's a CGI setup. If you could do it, you can rent servertime and make some $$$$.

An IBM pSeries p595 fully loaded.
Sure, it'd have little use except for some crazy SETI@Home cracking as well as general playing with, but it'd be cool

Oh and maybe a SunFire E25K just for the heck of it, and for the same reason

Sony 42" LCD VEGA

1366 x 768 would be just fine for gaming.

Seeing as the topic is a gamic computer, I guess I'd just have to make the standard NF4 SLI system with an Asus A8N-SLI, dual 6800 Ultras, A64 FX-55, some Raptor 74s and 4GB of those Patriot CL 2-3-2-5 PC3200 1GB sticks.

For the all-out regular desktop I think I'd have to make something completely different, though.

A s754 SFF desktop box, cooled with a Zalman Resorator(sp).
Samsung hard drive (Nidec FDB, like my current one) suspended in the 5.25" bay, and an external DVD-RW, preferably quiet...maybe a Panasonic.
Probably a M-Audio Audipphile USB for sound (EAX can--um, what's the new ATOT one, oh yeah--DIAF).
For video, whatever the fastest dual-DVI card I could get that the Zalman would cool under heavy load.
Of course, dual-20" or better LCD displays.

8-way Opteron, run Seti-BOINC on all, buy Maya Complete, as many gigs of ram the mobo would take, top end Quattro, SCSI RAID, yadda yadda ya. Then I'd buy a second PC for Gaming, fastest FX or A64, couple gigs of ram, SCSI RAID, 6800 Ultra SLI, yadda yadda ya.
