If someone told you to pick a car for $15K, newer than 2002 and less than 40K miles, what would you get?

Might be able to find a private sale for a Honda Accord, Chrysler 300M, Volkswagen Passat, Ford Mustang GT, or Nissan Maxima. And, might be able to get an Infinity G35 if you lower your requirement a little.

I like econoboxes. They're economic. And I have a speeding problem that they help keep in check. And I was assuming you would buy a new one or keep the extra cash.

corollas-lots of wind and road noise at highway speeds, very uncharacteristic of toyota.
rsx's-beware of the 2nd gear grind issue in the MT. it was on the top 10 lemon list for a while but managed to get under most people's radars. 2004 tsx too (lots of complaints, not necessarily about the gears grinding.)
civics-are ok. have to test drive on the highway again.
i'm weary of the 2003 accords because its a first year model. 2004 accords can be pricey. i'd take a 2001-2002 accord and pocket the cash (that is, if i can find the one i want, which i haven't been able to after 3 months).

VW Golf TDI (You can get a new one for about $16K if you are crafty). 50 mpg is good.
A late model GTI could be had for around that price as well. GTIs are fun to drive. Reliability may be a negative, though.

Not to sound like Skoorb....but I'd have to go with the lowest milage and cleanest Maxima I could find.

Also for the Accords....there has been an issue with Automatic transmittions here lately that have shown up on 2001-2003 models i believe.

yea, and that recall includes CLs, TLs, and CR-Vs (not sure). that's why im shopping for a MT, effectively eliminating 75% of the used accords on the market, which is why i'm having such a hard time finding one (that's also clean and under 60k miles and EX trim). hope the OP has better luck than i do.
