First of all you absolutly cant assume he is not armed thats a REALLY REALLY stupid assumtion in this case.
Motor Vehicles kill far more people every year than guns so the fact that he is trying to steal your car means he is currently sitting in a weapon capeable of killing you and trying to get it started so that he can use it to do whatever it takes to get away with it including running you over with it.
I would ask him to stop, if he does not i would call the police and then stand infront of the car with weapon drawn till they arrive. If he tries to flee i would beat the shit out of him and wait for police. If he manages to get the car started before the police arrive i would shoot to kill. Its either that or he runs me over and kills me so its up to him how he wants to play it but im not letting some gutless car thief run me over with my own car, and im not going to stand there and watch it drive away either.

Your op said he threw you outside the car/truck, in the time it took him to undo your seatbelt to make throwing you out possible would give me more than enough time to turn off the car/truck and grab the keys. He would then throw you out, and i would ask him to stop, and then proceed with what i stated in my post. It is illegal to drive without a seatbelt and pretty much impossible to just open a door and quickly throw someone out of a vehicle if they are belted in.

well if you drive with no belt you are an idiot and something i never do so i would never be in that situation.

There is a difference between someone killing you and through action causing a series of events that precipitates your death, if I were to kill the car thief then logically it could be extended to something like killing my boss if I knew they were going to fire and that losing my job would force me to lose my house, live on the streets and probably die from starvation. Both are wrong. If you kill someone who is first hand trying to kill you that is hugely different.
You'd need to be quiet if you ever did shoot someone...just in the outline above you made it clear you could have taken him physically and maybe out of fear he had no choice but to commit to fleeing in your car.
You saying you'd shoot the tires out and catch up to him is pretty funny in the later post. Do you think he is going to pull over so he can change them? Also shooting out tires is much like that 'knee shot" the movies make look simple. Guy's like 50-100 yards away and some dude shoots from the hip with a direct hit.
