Is this for all of the hills? I thought Rushmore was specifically sacred, which was why this was always a problem.
As far as I know, it is all of the hills. Plains Natives were not as site specific as Pueblo Natives, who constructed Kivas akin to Christian churches on sacred spots.
And that's an understatement. All of the Rushmore park has to be the lamest, gaudiest, most worthless monument of any nation that I have visited. For a country that seems to pride itself on not having kings, it is a very strange thing.
GF and I stopped by while driving from one part of the country to the next. The center was staffed by young Russian kids, and basically every other word out of their mouths was "fuck" (in Russian).
Might as well have stopped off at "World's largest Ball of Yarn," or one of those roadside Gator parks in Florida.
It was my junior year of high school when we stopped by. We were doing a "west" vacation, and I thought parts of Yellowstone were tacky, but that place took it to a whole different level.
I finally moved out west for several years and discovered some amazing places sitting in the middle of nowhere, on BLM land, with no guided tours, signs and other BS.
I think that is what insults me the most at some bigger parks, the crowds, and being "guided" through them.
