This guy is a hero of mine. Literally led an entire country's population through one of the most brutal wars in its history. "Yes I know our cities are being bombed, I know your children are being killed while they sleep, I know your sons are being killed by the hundreds of thousands; but I will get us through this." And the guy did.
Well, mostly FDR did. And Stalin to a degree
Churchill was a great inspirational leader and he kept morale up. But America and Russia won the war in Europe. Churchill came along for the ride.
I honestly can't think of another president that would deserve to be on Mt Rushmore and it's unlikely we'll ever again have one that does. The guys up there had a pretty big advantage, they were enshrined on the rose-colored glow of past success. They had done great things and their fuck-ups got lost in the sands of time. The press was a whole lot easier to control back then and the flow of information to the populace easier to stifle. The people only heard about the good stuff. Now the only people who are electable are the lapdogs of special interests who finance the campaigns. We're never going to elect a great man or even a man with great ideas. The only way some President is going to rise above the muck is if things really hit the fan here, another civil war or a natural disaster of epic proportions like Yellowstone blowing. If the country could ride those out and emerge on the other side whole the president would get credit for it even if he didn't deserve it.
