Any ever try Yukon jack. Love the stuff. Smooth and sweet yet powerfull. Although it usually does not burn right away, I usually get a warm sensation a few seconds later. Much of the burn is the desicating effect of alcohol on the esophagus, and this is hard to avoid with higher proof drinks. The degree of sugar tends to decrease the drying but cannot hide it entirely. As for vodka, I still like Stoli but mostly mixed, straight has too little taste for me. As for beer give me an ale or amber or better yet a stout.

however if you drink really cheap vodka (fleischmanns and other such shite), you can tell the difference. solution: run it through a brita filter (3-6 times), and it'll be much nicer, almost at smirnoff levels (myth busters, any1?).

btw, a delicious mix:

skyy melon vodka
cranberry juice

tastes EXACTLY like a cherry jolly rancher. mmmm...

You don't know what you're talking about. I can definetly taste a difference between smirnoff and greygoose or any other vodka for that matter. If I order a grey goose/tonic, I can tell if they use something else or if they are in fact using grey goose. And I dont think grey goose's labels are nice or fancy. I've seen PLENTY of more fancy and well designed eye catching labels on bottles of vodka.

several comments:

1. i really doubt you can - in fact, i bet you are convincing yourself you can w/o proof - but even if you could, you would be in the VAST minority. bottom-of-the-barrel vodka aside, i bet if you did a BLIND taste test with say Smirnoff, Absolut, and Grey Goose you and most ppl could not guess which was which better than chance. the only ppl who would really know are professional taste testers and that has a lot to do with their approach: trying each vodka side by side, spitting it out, etc. for those of us who drink it for fun, there's very little difference between mid-range vodka and high end vodka.

2. i don't literally mean the label is pretty. i mean that the name "grey goose" has a reputation as the "best" which IMO is related far more to its price tag and advertising than to its taste.

3. after the first two or three shots, they all taste the same anyway

That is so wrong I don't know where to even begin... Smirnoff is the vodka that burns my throat & the little more expensive Ketel One does not. Obvious difference.

And if you remember from the Mythbusters episode, their conclusion was the myth is busted, and a waste of filters.

i'd like to see you do a blind taste test with smirnoff and ketel one. hell, throw in absolut, filtered bartons and some other junk in there. i bet you wouldn't do better than chance.

as for myth busters, i don't remember it exactly, but the myth was that filtering cheap vodka made it identical to high end vodka. there were a few interesting results: the professional taste tester ranked the vodka as you'd expect - cheap vodka the worst, followed by more and more filtered vodka, all the way up to the high end as the best. that means that the vodka got BETTER with filtration although it never acheived - to a PROFESSIONAL - the quality of high end vodka. so the myth was busted but the fact is that filtering DOES HELP.

moreover, most ppl just can't tell the difference between a cheap filtered vodka and a high end vodka. in fact, i think the episode mentioned that too, as the pro taste tester was the only one who ranked the vodkas appropriately.

Haha. What a woman.

once you get out of college, you'll learn there's nothing manly about drinking alcohol that tastes like crap.

as for myth busters, i don't remember everything, but i'm pretty sure they concluded that filtering made the vodka BETTER but did not as good as the high end vodka to PROFESSIONAL TASTE TESTER. however, as i've mentioned, with the exception of professional taste testers, most ppl just can't tell the difference between a cheap filtered vodka and a high end vodka. in fact, i think the episode mentioned that too.

So who are these PROFESSIONAL TASTE TESTERS? Do they have to go to TASTE TESTERS school? Is there a Society of PROFESSIONAL TASTE TESTERS? I ask because I want to become one!

i know that for wine, there are several certifications you get to become a "professional". there are sommeliers, master sommeliers, masters of wine, etc. as you go up in level, the tests be come very rigorous. i wouldn't be surprised if vodka had something similar, although prob. not as hardcore since vodka doesn't have the history and worldwide appeal of wine.

moreover, pros have two things going for them that you probably don't:

1. they typically have taste buds far more sensitive than the average person
2. they try vodkas SIDE BY SIDE to recognize the differences between them in a scientific fashion. they also spit the vodka out, take notes, repeat, etc to develop their palletes.

your taste tasting of vodka, at best, results in you vomitting it out.

In college I'd try a lot of different vodkas. I don't think there's a better bang for the buck than Finlandia. It's a few more dollars than Smirnoff but goes down much smoother. I recently tried this stuff called "Svedka" the other day. I was a little wary because it was so cheap, but it went down extremely smooth. Finlandia use to be a lot less expensive than what it is now. I can remember getting handles of it on sale at Bevmo for no more than $18-19. Now, it's around $23 when it goes on sale.

In my opinion, Grey Goose isn't worth it. I've done shots of it and had it in mixed drinks and it doesn't taste that much better to rationalize spending several extra dollars for it. Skyy is complete crap in my opinion, but it's usually in the mid-to-high $20 range, which I don't understand at all - the blue bottle makes it more expensive, perhaps? It burns every which way I drink it.

Anything in a plastic bottle, stay far away from it. You're just asking for a burning throat, especially if you're taking shots.

WTF "victim of advertising"? Where do you ever see Grey Goose advertising?

Vodka is good stuff. My favorite is Tito's Handmade Vodka. I'm finishing off a bottle of Grey Goose that I received as a gift. It is pretty good, but I prefer Tito's.

a quote from the creator of grey goose:

So we took $3 million, which was going to be our total profit for a year, and we put it into advertising. We made big, beautiful ads that listed Grey Goose as the best-tasting vodka in the world, and we indoctrinated the distributors and 20,000 bartenders, and when somebody would come in and say, What's your best-tasting vodka, they said Grey Goose.

there's grey goose ads on tv as well.

now, obviously other vodkas advertise, but my point was that grey goose successfully advertised themselves as the "best vodka", so people believe that before they try it, which creates a placebo effect.

while this is terrific for grey goose, and there's nothing wrong with a successful marketing campaing, in terms of actual taste, most people probably couldnt' distinguish it in a blind taste test from other mid to high range vodkas.

I'm inclined to agree, people in general, especially the younger generation, are extremely succeptible to advertising. Advertising which creates an image for the product seems to go over quite well in particular.

lol way to take that quote out of context and leave out the most important part

We submitted two bottles to the Beverage Testing Institute, and Grey Goose won as the best-tasting vodka in the world. So we took $3 million, which was going to be our total profit for a year, and we put it into advertising. I have started to drink Three Olives and it is now my vodka of choice when comparing taste to price. I also like Stoli. for certain drinks (vodka tonic, gimlet) it has a distinct taste which I think is better than other vodka's when mixed with tonic water. Also, Smirnoff = crap.

yeah... and smirnoff apparently won this past year... yet i don't see too many ppl here raving about it, which proves my two arguments:

1. grey goose had a very succesful marketing campaign
2. most ppl can't tell vodkas apart very well

What kind of smirnoff won and I want to see some proof. Smirnoff tastes like sticking a gas pump in your mouth and pulling the trigger.

lol way to take that quote out of context and leave out the most important part

We submitted two bottles to the Beverage Testing Institute, and Grey Goose won as the best-tasting vodka in the world. So we took $3 million, which was going to be our total profit for a year, and we put it into advertising. We made big, beautiful ads that listed Grey Goose as the best-tasting vodka in the world, and we indoctrinated the distributors and 20,000 bartenders, and when somebody would come in and say, What's your best-tasting vodka, they said Grey Goose.

yeah... and smirnoff apparently won this past year... yet i don't see too many ppl here raving about it, which proves my two arguments:

1. grey goose had a very succesful marketing campaign
2. most ppl can't tell vodkas apart very well

Are you kidding? His answer to that interview was when Grey Goose was first launched. You must be a journalist, taking people's quote out of context.

Although I agree most ppl can't tell vodkas apart very well, and it's very difficult to tell what kind of vokda is used in a cocktail, but when taking SHOTS of Grey Goose, there is a distinct difference to mid-level vodka such as Smirnoff.

everyone that's raving about grey goose is a victim of advertising and a nice (expensive) label. when they do blind taste tests, the best tasting vodka is often not grey goose, but actually smirnoff. and since most of you aren't professional taste testers (myself included), i doubt you'd be able to tell much of a diff between grey goose and smirnoff, so you might as well save some money.

however if you drink really cheap vodka (fleischmanns and other such shite), you can tell the difference. solution: run it through a brita filter (3-6 times), and it'll be much nicer, almost at smirnoff levels (myth busters, any1?).

btw, a delicious mix:

skyy melon vodka
cranberry juice

tastes EXACTLY like a cherry jolly rancher. mmmm...

That's bullshvt, because I've done a blind taste test myself. "Smoothest" does not equal "Best taste." Grey Goose is no doubt one of the smoothest out there.

WTF "victim of advertisint"? Where do you ever see Grey Goose advertising?

a quote from the creator of grey goose:

So we took $3 million, which was going to be our total profit for a year, and we put it into advertising. there's grey goose ads on tv as well.

wasn't grey goose was launched in 1997 or so? not that long ago, so i don't see how that makes the quote any less relevant.

take a look at this article where smirnoff was rated #1 and grey goose didn't make the top 10.

that being said, at the end of our tasting it was Smirnoff at the top of our list, ahead of many other names that are no doubt of higher status in stylish bars and lounges. Some of those names did not even make our Top 10. Grey Goose from France, one of the most popular vodkas, was felt to lack balance and seemed to have more than a touch of sweetness.

The vodkas we tasted had character and their own flavors and aromas, even though the differences among them were often subtle and difficult to articulate.

that last quote is from professional taste testers who are trying the vodka straight. if they have trouble, a normal person's palette has very little chance.

There's not a vodka in the world that is soo smooth that it can be compared to drinking air. Grey Goose is still a bit rough if taken as a shot.

Maybe I'll head to safeway to find the one I brought for a friend's b-day party. Essentially it was smooth enough to make them consider Grey Goose as 2nd best.
