You're saying 'white name' intentionally to troll, right? Well, I'm not taking the bait

Anyway, you and I both know that I can't answer that question because clearly that's not what I think.

OK then please point to anywhere in this thread where that it was implied that Indian people don't "deserve" those names.

If you can't, then we know you are actually talking about how you feel.

Frankly, if someone has not visited another country, it is okay for them to have incorrect assumptions about it. Doesn't make it xenophobia.

I did say 'borderline' Xenophobic. And xenophobia is basically 'negative perception of something that's foreign'. I think it's appropriate to give that label here in this case.

Also, the phenomenon discussed in the thread(companies asking their employees to assume American names) is true and does happen.

I understand that. But what the OP said is (direct quote): "Just tell me the name you were frigging born with. If I can't say it then I don't care. "

I believe it's reasonable for me to call it borderline xenophobic.

Here's the line I just quoted the OP in my reply above:

Just tell me the name you were frigging born with. If I can't say it then I don't care.

Implication is not an exact science, is it? Because otherwise it wouldn't be call an implication. But yes, that was the line that got to me and made me think of bad things.

Having said that, I'm going to try and be completely honest here and say that reading the original post again, just now, it didn't give me the exact same response I had the first time I read it. I still didn't think it's funny, but let's just say that it doesn't really bother me as much now. So maybe my state of mind affect how I feel when I read stuff? I don't know.

Exactly my point.

Nowhere is it implied that anyone "doesn't deserve" a name. You injected that. Your own thoughts. That is your doing.

See my big long post. Deal with your own racism before you start pointing lashing out at others.

 I was about to say the same thing. No one was peddling that at all. That's just what cronos inferred, rather erroneously I might add.

Now I'm just curious at this point. Stripped the joke and everything else, and imagine someone said this to you: "Just tell me the name you were frigging born with. If I can't say it then I don't care."

What do you get if someone tells you this? Note that I'm not asking what your response would be, just what you think someone who said something like that is thinking, i.e. what do you think the sentence implies?

(everyone else can play too, this question is not just for rudeguy)

See my big long post. Deal with your own racism before you start pointing lashing out at others.

Well I certainly never thought of myself of having racism thought, but if it turns out that I do, I will deal with it and I'll never forget rudeguy from ATOT who helped me realized it

I deal with it on a daily basis. Apparently Josh (my real name) is challenging for some people who don't speak English as a first language. I don't care. They say "Yoish"? I say "ok sure" and move on. If I tried telling them my name is Alejandro and they called me on it and asked my real name, I would tell them Josh.

Hold on a second my man. You aren't Indian are you? Why are you being offended about a harmless observation made by someone when actual Indians like me aren't? You missed the posts that were actually offensive like this one, and instead made a big deal of a trivial issue, forcing one of the more rational and constructive members of the forum to quit.

Not cool man. Not cool at all. :\

:hmm: Sounds familiar...

I don't see why this thread needs to be 7 pages long.

Because certain parties can't fathom why a person would want to know another person's actual name. Obviously it's because we're racists who seek to suppress Indians by encouraging them to use the name that they were born with.

I work with a large number of Asians, many change their names to Anglo names and are quite proud of them, and they all have a story about the name they picked. It's actually sort of cool, and gives me a bit of pride that they think so much of our country and culture that they took Anglo names, including my fiancée...

It does at least help mix things up a bit.

I had one day about 3 months ago where I had to deal with 5 different people named Jeff in the same day. One I met with directly, and the rest were either by phone or by email. Luckily that's rare, but that was just getting ridiculous.

It can keep me them straight if I have to talk to Wan or Yoko or Paresh or Misha or Aristides.

But hey, either way certainly works.

Those with crappy (ie christian) names are either rice bags (converted coolies like "Bobby" Jindal or Dinesh D'Souza) or do it as part of their job since westerners are too stupid to pronounce anything with more than two syllables properly.

Heck, they can't even speak their own language without fumbling and have the nerve to make fun of others who speak proper English, albeit with a foreign accent.

Sigh, untouchables.

Agreed. I made that joke and immediately thought someone would call me on it, but nobody did. I checked back in on this thread a few times and was surprised to see the attacks on HR while my joke went unquestioned.

Now I understand the difference between a joke and the actual problem India is having with the availability of clean and safe sanitation. I took HR's OP to be said somewhat tongue-in-cheek so floated the joke (no pun intended) without thinking too much about it.

I can see both sides of the argument. If someone expects you to do business with them then they should at least be willing to give you their real name. Then again, maybe they are trying to be polite by adopting a name that their average customer might find easier to understand, pronounce and remember. When I speak with someone I just accept that whatever name they give me is the name they want me to use and do so.

If I offended anyone with my joke then I am sorry, but at some point we need to be not so quick to offend. I just happened to be of Mexican descent, and I've heard some darn funny Mexican jokes and not been offended. What does offend me is when Mexicans, or any other group, claim racism to excuse their bad behavior.

And I hope HR doesn't leave, he's a pretty level headed guy and we need more of them here in ATOT. Plus, I am jelly of his ride.

Making a statement that implies that every single Indian defecates outdoors is a little racist. As someone who is actually Indian, only the poorest(which admittedly, do make up a significant % of the population) do this. And anyone who is qualified enough to work at a call centre definitely doesn't.

If I accuse all white Americans of having sex with their sisters, because some uneducated ones in rural southern US do so, won't you be offended?

He's already left.

And I was wondering lately why I'm missing HR comments on P&N forum. Too bad, we lost such an active member. Good luck with your life HR and hope to reconsider your decision.

As for the original post, I really found nothing racist about it, nothing at all.

Wow, missed this whole thread.

Too bad HR left, but as I read it (and I may have completely misread it), HR was not formally sanctioned for the post, and Perk was expressing his personal disapproval as opposed to official disapproval. I understand that as an admin, even when he posts as a regular member his disapproval carries some extra weight, but I think he should be able to share his opinion like anyone else can.

The way HR left, it seemed like he'd been ready to go for some time, and if he feels like he needs a break, he should take it. But I hope that if he does feel like coming back at some point, he won't feel awkward about it. It doesn't seem like anyone in this thread wanted him to go anyway.

This is wrong. HR is a great guy that was pushed over... I will miss his posts.

HR quit the forum because of this thread? I am sure he's back with another avatar... wasn't that a new guy who resurrected this thread last week?

While working a project in California some years ago I had to have some items machined and I was directed to a small machine shop owned by a guy from Vietnam Nam whose first name was Charlie. I don't know if he surfed.
