It's a stupid and incredibly outdated requirement, but they'd better learn that going in, I guess. Once they get hired, they'll be using shit like Lotus Notes, if the positions are anything like the gov't orgs that I've dealt with.

I applied for a GS-11 position and I didn't even qualify.
WTF HR!

I'm stuck here as a contractor. I copied word for word what the listing said and put it on my resume.

We use Outlook and Office07.
Not much a fan of Lotus notes, wife works for IBM. Use to be good but to much bloat now.

I have a question for you OP.

Does a D count for accounting credit in a class? Will my employer see my transcript or just my resume?

Its hard to say. It depends on the job and also the Dept/HR. If it was just a basic qualification and the job had little to do with accounting/minor part of job then maybe. For transcript all I look for in a 130 series job is that it was there and complete. I have not run any jobs that are entry level where college mattered much.

Sorry i could not help more.

Now if you don't follow the rules and don;t send in your documents or self select yourself out of the job, then yes I remove you for that.

Then I stand corrected. I figured they gave you a little more power considering how much you were stressing about the standards that need to be met in your department. It appears that it has little to do with standards and more to do with following the rules.

I work for the government too and while there are some pretty strict regulations where I work we don't complain about the regular people when they ask questions. In my department, what we do is try our best to make things easier for them so that less questions are asked. If several people are asking the same question like your e-mail situation then that is a sign that things may need to be changed to make it easier.

And if the courts, congress, etc... would that would be fine by me. But in my listings I post info like that with words that are all cap like "MUST have..." and some that are listed twice in bold and red. yet I still get calls about why their computer is not workig.

And yes I did get 1 person today asking about why her computer shuts IE down when she clicks a button to apply. only thing i could say, without getting fired, was i have had many others already apply. Please try another computer and/or call tech support at...

Nice. There is a reason that books detailing how to navigate through bureaucracy to apply for government jobs practically constitute their own genre. And yet comparable resources aren't necessary to apply for jobs at IBM or Microsoft.

Private companies don't require you to submit in person form 197821d (NOT C!!!!) notarized and in triplicate on the third Thursday after the vernal equinox between the times of 1920 and 1955 UTC. Unless that day falls on a federal holiday in which case you must use for 197821c (NOT D!!!!) and deliver it in person on the following Wednesday between the times of 1215 and 1235 PDT.

This is why you list under multiple series. More flexibility in selection.

oh and NSPS > GS for many reasons including negotiable starting salaries

Our fax at work collects dust, and Imost of the time it doesn't even have paper in it. Faxes are junk - completely obsoleted by email.

I remember my wife had to fax someone in Hong Kong, and god damn that was a pain. No one I knew had a fax - I had to come into work to fax the fucking thing.

O!!! WHAT PART OF OUR RULES ARE LAW DO YOU NOT GET??? People have been removed from their jobs 6+ months later as they were not hired correct, i.e. legal. I had a posting of mine removed as they did not like a couple things. I had to rebuild it to fix a couple words and 1 sheet.

And yes they are being childish idiots. With so many kids being treated with paper gloves today, no red ink billys feelings will get hurt. Or we don;t use letter grades anymore, etc... i see idiots all the time thinking they can have it there way as they always get their way.
This is the real world, you don;t get it your way. Esp with the Gov.

I editted my post. I just don't understand why you could not have simply stated to them, "No, we cannot accept it that way" and be done with it without blacklisting their resume. If they were unprofessional then that is a reason to dismiss them but you shouldn't dismiss them for asking a question.

Where did I say I blacklisted their resume?

Please don't ever apply for Fed Gov, we have enough idiots that don't get it.

Wow, what level of asshattery is required to apply for your job?

Seriously... fax machines are outdated... they're old technology. There are better and more secure methods of sending official documents. Just because the federal government uses it and requires it, doesn't make it the best. Thus, it is not unreasonable for someone to ask if there's an alternative method they can use to send the appropriate documents. Very few people have their own fax machines now days so if they have to use a fax they'd be required to go to a place like Kinko's. That sure is inconvenient for people - if you can't understand that, you're more ignorant than them.

What part of we have been sued many times for many different reason. Fax machines hold up in court more so then any thing else.

Fax machines are simple, work, and stand up in court. We also don't even touch the faxs. They are scanned in with a special cover sheet.

But yea I am a ass for thinking someone applying for a TS job with a college degree should have to follow the rules(Law).

I'm not saying you should refuse to follow regulations... I'm saying you should be more understanding when someone asks if there's an alternative to such an uncommon method of communication now days. It may be common in the government or corporations, but the average person probably hasn't even seen a fax machine in years.

What is there to understand someone who reads the written instructions that state "fax your transcripts with special coversheet" then contacts about an alternative is just an idiot if there was an alternative it would have been listed. To me this type of person is lazy and will spend time looking for alternatives to get around doing their job instead of just doing it.

To me this type of person looks for ways to work more efficiently instead of wasting time doing things one way just because that's how it's been done in the past.

Agreed. And I'm not applying for your job either, so I don't care how you feel about it. Personally I mean. Professionally, if you write like that, the ironing is deep, I mean about the idiot part.

The State Dept. has the worst job application ever. I know a bunch of people who were interested, but decided not to apply because they were turned off by the length of the application.

The only real long ones are the entry level ones and they are like that due to a lawsuit. Again out of our hands.

I had to fill one of those out to get my job. It was 100 questions. I think they have it down to like 80 now.

LOL! You can see from the response that people don't know how to follow instructions - "but I want to do it MY way!"

It said fax. So fax. It still a very vital and heavily used business tool. It didn't say E-mail. People rely too much on E-mail these days and it's making them very lazy showing that they don't know how to use business tools - like the telephone, mail, facsimile, etc.

I mean really how hard is it to walk to a fax machine (the copier and printer these days), type in the number and hit send? All contracts, RFP responses, bids, etc are either delivered to me, by my requests and by legal by hard copy or fax only. Final signing being hard copy mailed (well overnight with confirmation) AND faxed for records. Failure to do so indicates a basic failure of being able to follow directions.

To be complaining about all these people you should learn how to type, and also insert an in front of a vowel not a.

Can someone explain to me what a fax can do that an email cannot? A fax simply sends a document to another fax machine by sending it over a phoneline.

Sure an email is only a soft copy, but a quick print makes it a hard copy if you need to do so.

The disadvantages of faxes over email

1 - Less secure since personal info can sit in a fax tray for hours ( a big problem)
2 - Requires a phoneline, so extra cost.
3 - They require toner and servicing
4 - Is only peer to peer (i think?). Email can be sent to multiple people
5 - Creates a hard copy which needs to be filed somewhere
6 - Way less reliable. Some faxes just don't work with each other.

In other words, they suck and should die a horrible death like other obsolete junk like floppy disks
