Seems like in B you're working 25% more hours for 25% more pay. Really depends on whether you value your free time or would rather trade 2 hrs a day of that for your regular hourly.

I picked B. Then a client hired me for the hours in A for the salary that B was paying me. Being married now, it's the best of both worlds. Good money, plenty of schedul flexibility, and plenty of free time.

I work A's hours cept I also work those hours on Friday, but I get paid B's salary. I have a very lax job for what I get paid. For instance I watched the soccer games today on ESPN3 cause I was bored.

Your numbers don't add up. If B is 100% pay and A is 75% of B, then B is 33% more pay than A. If A is 100% pay and B is 125% of A then A is 80% of B's pay.

What I'd take depends entirely upon my bottom line, which depends upon how much each pays (in a dollar amount) and what the cost of living is where each job is. If I can make a comfortable living off of A, I'd take it.

And that's why economists use a mid-point formula when calculating elasticities...

B) Work a lot more hours 9-7 or 8 Mon - Fri, high pressure, in the financial services industry where you can learn valuable skills and make 25% more salary.

by a mile, because after you're in a serious relationship it becomes MUCH harder to balance

I will go against the others above me; I would rather work more and learn/earn more, vs work less, given your current situation.

Obama's president: who needs a job? Just become a census worker and fuel his propaganda machine.

I'm beginning to think you have a real problem as you try to inject politics into every thread. Shut the hell up.

would you rather work:

A) Comfy 10-5:30 type job and work from home on Fridays for 25% less pay

B) Work a lot more hours 9-7 or 8 Mon - Fri, high pressure, in the financial services industry where you can learn valuable skills and make 25% more salary.

Which would you choose?

25% more or less from what? 25% less pay from option B? and 25% more pay than option A? In both cases, the pay is still relatively equal since A has pretty much 25% less hours.

the pay is NOT equal since you don't have the option of working 25% more at option A for 25% more pay.

B. Gotta do it while you're young to build your resume for later when you have a family and kids if you're planning on getting married.

When young is the time to work to a person's fullest capability in a position that provides the best growth and development. This is the only way for a person's skillset and capabilities to grow and reach their potential.

Of course intelligent decisions have to be made concerning professional growth potential and education should always have a higher priority than work.

I work a B type job perhaps minus pressure (but lots of hours) and it's garbage.
I'm sick of not having acceptable free time and I'd take a pay cut to do so.

Depends on the values of A and B. If it's 150k vs 200k, imo it's a no-brainer to pick A. If it's 45k vs 60k, then B.

This is assuming both jobs are equal in all other respects.

without base pay numbers it cannot be decided. 25% off 35k is a big thing, 25% off 125k is not much.

Did B for 8 years, now doing A. But its the same job, and don't take the pay cut. In fact pay has gone up since I started working from home.

I don't much care for high-stress jobs.
And the financial services industry is about as enticing to me as is stocking shelves at Walmart.

I've worked tremendous hours for most of my adult life. From 17-26 I was often working 60+ hours per week and/or attening college full time. I'm 28 now and I enjoy the relatively stress free life I have now, so I'd go with A until I got bored.

I wouldn't want to work from home though.

Edit: Oh, and 1000-1730? Jesus. Give me 0630-1400.

I'd rather do option A. I work in the media which is fast paced but pretty friendly and well coordinated. Hours aren't that long either. My internship shift at Toronto radio station is seven hours since we don't officially get breaks or lunch. You work weird shifts sometimes but I don't mind.

I did the fast paced, high stress jobs in college. Working for car rental. A lot of the people who work there are douchy and I swear they're functionally retarded sometimes. Everything gets pilled on me and the bosses don't do anything. I now know why my generation (Y) is so looked down upon. I'm going to quit as soon as I find paid work in the media. Hopefully that's sooner than later.

B and spend a little bit of extra money to offset the stress. Bonus is more experience for later on. Stay out of debt either way

I, too, want to know more about your theoretical dollars. Lets say C = 60,000/year. Are you saying A = 45,000/year and B = 60,000/year, or are you saying A = 45k/year as it's a less than 9-5 desk type job, and B= 75k/year as it's more than a 9-5 desk type job, where your typical 9-5 job would make 60,000/year, but just isn't an option.

Given the first scenario, I think I prefer option A, given the second scenario, I would definitely consider B, but would probably depend on C in both cases.

That's pretty close to the two options I had coming out of college. Option A) go work for one of the Big 4 accounting firms, make pretty good money, but work 50-60hrs a week; or option B) work for the govt., make less money, but I only work 40hrs a week. I chose option B and would do it again in a heartbeat. I think the clincher was when we had a guy who did estate planning come and talk to our class. He said he worked 60+hrs a week and made $600-700k per year. He also said he was 45 but looking at him I would have guessed 55 easy. Working so many hours had not been kind to that man.

Life is too short to have work be the number one thing in your life.

Not enough info to give you an informed opinion, but in general you should put in the hard hours while you're still young if it is economically advantageous to do so.

To me it's a dumbass question.

A

By eleventy billion percent. Work isn't important in life, it's what gets in the way of everything that's important in life. Anything that involves less work is good.
