There will always be defense contracts which promote the technology seen in those wars (and WWI didn't really have any breakthroughs other than tanks (correct me if I am wrong)). WWII certainly produced some breakthroughs that while used militarily also helped civilian life (radar, jet engines, nuclear energy, computers). While progressing industry there was also a cost for this rapid progression.
