This thread really makes me want to buy another pinball machine. I found an excellent-condition Attack from Mars (not the remake) on Craigslist for $6400, only 1.5 hours away! Or a mint T2 for $2700 3.5 hours away. I didn't need to contribute to my IRA this year...

Since we're all posting pictures of our machines...

Most of the inserts are bubbling but it doesn't affect gameplay, though at some point I may work up the courage to try to remove the mylar which is usually hit or miss with machines from this era (mostly miss). The upside is I found a company making reproduction playfields so that could always be a plan B if I screw up the playfield beyond repair.

At some point I'll build my MAME machine. Already drew up a scaled-down sketch and have the CRT; just need the motivation.

I keep talking myself out of building a MAME cabinet, even a small one. Since I've owned arcade games in the past, I know I bore of them after awhile. When I go back and play old games, I'm like 'cool' nostalgia for a bit but not like I will sit there for hours. I might do that with some of the gun games like T2, but not much else. I decided it just wouldn't get much use.

Of course, to get the real ending, you have to do the whole thing twice...

Is it that way in the arcade version too?!?!?!?

I know the NES version had that but holy shit - if I spent the tens of thousands of quarters it would take to get to the end of that and found out I had to do it all over again to finish the game I'd probably kick the cabinet to death.

Another "map at the top of the screen as a carrot to spend quarters" game I wanted to see the end of but never did was Vanguard.

Edit - you know what? I think it was called Venture, not Vanguard.

Edit again - no, it was Vanguard.

A friend of mine bought one of those commercial MAME cabinets for like $2500 but I didn't like it.

Something was off about the controls. They weren't as responsive as original arcade cabinet controls were. It was frustrating to play.

I would be seriously pissed off if that happened to me.

Yea not all switches are the same, there's always going to be some give/take when it comes to building all encompassing cabinets.

Emulation is inherently more laggy, though authors hope to mitigate this with new “run-ahead emulation.” Takes a beefier system because it essentially involves emulating more than one instance, rewinding gameplay to insert your time-stamped input, fast forwarding the emulation to catch up with the real time output of the other emulator, and then restoring the same state on both instances. ZSNES did essentially the same thing for synchronizing netplay a LONG time ago but they weren’t adjusting for input latency.

Alright, I've convinced myself I do need to buy the Attack from Mars remake. I'm set on the Limited Edition in Martian Green. Gonna sleep on it tonight and put my deposit down by Monday (then move some money from my investments into my checking account...).

The thread in which I discovered a deep underground connection between sewing machines and video game nerd-dom.

We are through the looking glass, people.

how about 3 of those house of the dead or time crisis type games. Those are cool, sunset riders? but kinda sucks to have old ass arcade cabinets anyway i dont think people do that now days. just setup a laser projector and a SNES emulator for some kinda retro bs.
