the one i'm most likely to help out is the one whose sign says "will work for food" and is actually willing to do it

or the one who is playing a guitar and singing...or the one who is dancing, or banging on plastic drums(true story, anyone from austin probably knows leslie )

basically the one who is willing to do something to get it and doesn't just expect a handout

In the past, I would volunteer to take the individual to an appropriate location to purchase a meal for him/her. Actually got turned down a majority of the time.

Now, the only time I generally make any type of donation of this sort is to the musicians in the subway stations/halls.

I've actually only gave a handout 1 time ever.
It was dark in a shopping center and I see this Asian guy sitting in a corner and I felt so bad for the guy, I gave him $5.

You haveto remember lot of the bums are professional bums and make a good living off it and don't have to pay any in taxes.

Can make 40k+ easy doing this and even though it's illegal they still let this happen.

None. I give the money to Northwest Harvest instead, they supply food banks throughout Washington state.

A lot of the "bums" you meet are career grifters too lazy to work, not folks actually needing help.

The ones needing help usually have places they can go, they just don't want to put up with rules like "no boozing in the shelter."

That is true. But I still can not help but want to help the children. It is not there fault, but they are still suffering.

I work in NYC, and commute through penn station everyday. I see homless people and beggers all the time. If i have spare change or a buck in my pocket I will sometimes give them it. I would hope they are using it for food.

However, I do know most 'bums' are not really out of work or homes. You can see some of them change or go back to there food and water stockpile in a cooler in their cars sometimes.

There was a Hard Copy about a guy that just handed out blind cards at JFK airport or something....he was with sight, but not outside the law. He actually reported a $60k a year income and this was quite a few years ago.

No different than those claiming disabilty and then working under the table.

I usually end up giving a bum my change when I come from Taco Bell, etc. I sorta keep a list of all the regular bums downtown. I try to give to the "good" hobos that I recognize and know will put it to good use. There are other bums that I refuse to talk to because I've seen them buy cigs with my change. Anyway,

could one of you kind sirs spare this hungry bum some change?

I wouldn't give them anything. I see the same bums year after year on the subway. And the way I see it, they seem to make anywhere from $0.50 to $1 for every subway car they enter and their gimmick takes about 5 minutes. Even if I assume they are making the lower end of the spectrum, they still make away with more than minimum wage. Meanwhile, I worked as "maintenance" (read: janitor) when I was 15 at the local YMCA for a summer for minimum wage. If I assume they make more, they'll make more than most honest-living lower class people.

And I'd rather dump my food in the trash. Any food I give them will mean they can squander their remaining cash on booze. And I've seen bums throw away pennies and reject perfectly good food. A Snapple truck driver tried to give a bum a bottle of Snapple from the back of his truck that as missing the label. The bum looked at him disgustedly, so the driver just threw it in the trash. Seriously, beggars can't be choosers.

If I were to give money, I'd give it to the bums who perform. Sing, play an instrument, etc. That way, I'm paying for a service that I enjoyed (if I enjoyed it) and I feel they are "earning" their keep. Of course, I still wouldn't give them a penny.

Most people that beg for change do it because it's profitable or because they have shtty money management skills.

Call me an ass, but I'd rather them be hungry than give myself a false sense of gratification.

If I can get a job and earn my money, there isn't a reason they shouldn't. Why should I work everyday so they can have free money?

I'd have no opposition to helping out people in a shelter, but anyone who blindly gives away free money is a moron.
