There was a program in the UK a few years back that followed some "bums" around in various cities. One guy who looked like he had slept on the streets for years thought no one was looking at the end of the day and went back to his brand new car and drove home to a nice house. Im sure there are genuine needy people out there but certainly in the big cities at the "money making" spots theres professional bums making $$$$$.

Basically, a small minority of homeless make a good living by panhandling just as a small minority of CEO?s commits fraud. Pointing to one example, which happened to make it on to TV BECAUSE IT WAS EXTREME does not prove ones point. Get it?

I've read that about 30% are mentally ill. That's a significant % that should not be on the streets.

You're thinking way too hard. I was simply trying to explain that watching a program where a person, who happens to fit into a particular segment of society, is breaking the law does not enable one to make vague generalizations regarding that whole segment of society. Okay?

You are going on and on about something that has nothing to do with the question. OK, assume a large percentage are mentally ill. Even if that's true, how in the fvck is it going to help them to give them money and enable them to continue begging instead of getting help?

So you're basically agreeing with those of us who say they are there by choice.
And you have got to be kidding me on those numbers.
There's a stoplight I go through on a regular basis. It's right next to a freeway off ramp where there are almost always panhandlers. In the 1-2 minutes I'm waiting at that light, I almost always see at least 1 person give them a bill. That's $30-$60/hr. If they are only spending an hour there, than they are even lazy at panhandling and it's their own fault.
